Lots of changes such as people not needing to be friends in order to join a room and the game intentionally giving you weak items if you camp at item boxes to try to get strong items. Also the ability to freely listen to all the music in the game.

Made it so that you cant acquire strong items when taking an Item Box by stopping or driving in reverse, or taking an Item Box that is in same location multiple times during a race.

Does this mean if you hit the same item box several times during different laps your item pool will be gimped?

Sandbagging is intentionally playing badly in a way to troll or grief. And yeah, if you stay around a group of item boxes to try to get strong items like blue shells it'll detect that and give you crappy items like bananas, green shells, and single mushrooms. I think choosing to actually continue racing will revert it back to normal.

But "taking the same item box several times during a race" suggests the item box is cursed for you for the rest of the race after first acquiring it.

Also I don't understand how the update prevents griefing.

Sandbagging wasn't just for griefing or trolling, it was a legitimate winning strategy on some tracks. It was more efficient to stay behind, get a bunch of really good items like Bullet Bills, Golden Mushrooms, and Lightning Bolts, and use those items and a few shortcuts to catch up to (and then speed past) the rest of the field safely instead of spending most of the race in the thick of the action where you can be derailed by random items.

But with this new update, now the game will detect if you're staying behind trying to intentionally sandbag and won't give you the good items needed to catch up, effectively killing the strategy for good.

More commonly referred to as bagging, its a strategy where you remain at the back of a race so that you can avoid getting hit by items from the middle of the pack as well as obtain strong speeds items like Mushrooms, Stars and Bullet Bills so that you can make a big comeback at the end of the race.

they killed sandbagging, something that not many players even did, but there are zero balance changes, so yoshi roller wheels meta kart combos are still the only thing you'll ever see online

Balance changes wouldn't change the existence of meta combos, unless those changes involved making every character and kart combo have the exact same stats.

bagging is usually a track-dependent problem. any track with shortcuts in close succession (Cheese Land for example) or with a ton of skippable offroad (like Dry Dry Desert) is p much bagging heaven. part of me doesn't like this because bagging does require some decision making and skill, but honestly it's so degenerate and lame that i'd be happy to see it go

Only on certain tracks. It actually got to the point where I avoided cheese land as much as possible since more than half of the room will be attempting to bag in high VR average worldwide (a.k.a. full of japanese players that are serious business) rooms. SNES mario circuit 3 was also the same.

*There is this one old "average cheese land" race video that I am struggling to find right now where every single waluigi in the room was trying to bag to the point that no one was barely pushing ahead to be the first place guy. The race took way longer than average to finish just because of how much everyone in the room was stopping at the item boxes and barely being the first place racer to help stronger items actually appear with the distance.*

Aww why lower the appearance of mirrored mode? Lower 200cc sure but keep mirrored where it's at. Also they shortened the item box respawn again? Thing must be damn near instant now

the castle mii suit is sick. I think each new suit gives your mii a unique trick, too. for example, the castle has them imitate sliding down a flag pole, blooper suit has them bob in the air like a swimming blooper, pokey suit has them teetering left to right, birdo suit has them mimic one of birdo's poses

I finally got home and the new tracks are great, except the new new one. Kind of bland compared to the last few. The rework on Bowser 3 is awesome, probably my favorite of the bunch. DK Mountain kicks ass too.

I am still stuck on the Wii U. I never got a switch. Friends I don't see anymore have gotten it, likely but most of my experiences I actually got my friends at the time hooked on it via the Wii U because of that game hehe

We played online too in different ways. Funny making observations. Like who votes for what track etc
