What is fried rice syndrome? Recently, this type of food poisoning with an ironically delicious-sounding name has entered the spotlight after a death 15 years ago due to fried rice syndrome resurfaced on social media.

The condition started gaining traction on TikTok after user @jpall20 posted a now-viral video highlighting the story of a young man who died after eating five-day-old, unrefrigerated, leftover pasta.

"For all the students and meal preppers out there, do not make your food, put it in a Tupperware, and then leave it on your counter for a week," the user warned.

Who doesnt have a fridge? It had to be plain pasta too cause the sauce would smell awful.

The plain pasta alone would smell bad enough after 5 days at room temperature.

I'm not super great at food safety, I'll cook dinner and leave a plate in the microwave for hours for seconds later, but even I know you don't eat shit that's been sitting on a counter for a week.

The real danger is rice.

You have to refrigerate it straight away, and you shouldn't leave it more than a day if you want to be absolutely safe (you'll probably get away with 2-3 at most). And make sure it's properly heated through, if you don't want stuff coming out of both ends later.

Yeah, this is why I'm overly paranoid about food safety. If I cook rice in the cooker, I won't eat it if it's left out for longer than 2 hours. I generally leave it on the counter long enough to cool down and then I put it in a container and straight to the fridge.

I know several people who will eat rice that has been left out for a day and...while they've been fine, it's just not worth the roll of the dice to me.

In fact it was advised to eat rice that's been left out for at least half a day to help fighting diabetes for people who's staple food is rice.

I don't think its particularly likely just like you probably won't get sick from undercooked meat most of the time... its just supposed to be one of the worst food poisonings when it does happen. If you are going to gamble on yourself at least you aren't serving it to others which would be the more negligent thing to do.

Basically bateria growing on the food produce a toxin as a byproduct that heat alone wont destroy. Get enough of it on there (5 DAYS worth) and well....

leaving almost ANYTHING on a counter for 5 days and then eating it is foul. How down bad do you have to be to eat 5 day old room temp pasta

No need to get paranoid about rice over this. I've eaten rice left out overnight and in the fridge for a week. Just don't leave it on the counter for days.

The toxin is like a chemical yes (called Cereulide if my surface level research is correct), produced by a strain of bacteria called Bacillus cereus. The poisoning comes from the chemical the bacteria make, not necessarily the bacteria themselves

Eating food that's been on the counter for 5 days is insane, I don't even eat stuff that has been left out overnight.

I've never heard of rice going bad or giving you the shits after sitting on a counter two hours after being cooked.
I must also be the luckiest man alive, cause I eat 3 hour old rice all the time

Even cooking rice leaves the bacteria bacillus cereus which thrives after you make it cause it grows in warm and moist environments and can grow exceptionally very quickly.

But I also eat 3 hour old rice and have had no issues, so

did he lost his sense of smell and taste? that would smell and taste so bad that there's no way you can't tell the food is rotten heck it would probably look weird too after 5 days without being in the fridge
also even in the fridge 5 days would be a bit too long,if i had 5 day old spaghetti in the fridge i would examine it to see if it was fine
