Man, where are all the users who insisted this would be GoTY and that players boycotting the game only made it more popular?
They're now convincing themselves that the game is being canceled

It didn't deserve any. Its a game made by a cookiecutter. If it got nominated you'd have to nominate the 30 other "dots on a map, shallow rpg elements with simon says combat" games that come out every year too.

This.

The game was beyond average.

The big surprise was FF16 getting snubbed for GoTY for Spider-Man 2 instead.

Spider-Man 2 was better than FF16. I liked 16 but again it's like an 8 or 8.5 outta 10.

Like 10% of FF16 is a 9/10 game, the rest is a 6/10

Spider-Man 2 doesn't surprise me, I would have subbed out Resident Evil for FFXVI though but regardless BG3 should be the clear winner regardless of what other games are on the list.

From what I recall from the game first being released, it's less that the game was amazing and more that for a movie tie-in game published by WB it ended up punching way above its weight in terms of the quality it did produce.

It's sort of like how the first Nickelodeon All-Stars wasn't very good, but everyone was still taken aback by how good it did end up being for what everyone assumed was just a cynical cash grab following the end of Smash Brothers updates.

Should it have?

Controversy with the author aside I've heard it's a mediocre experience given the source material.
Id agree its fairly mediocre, but Id also say its the same level as most third person adventure games like what Sony likes to put out, but they seem to get praised way more.

Spider-Man 2 is an 8/10.

It's the same game as the first one, with a slightly worse story.

as i have said in other topics.. the game is a mid game, its good at best 7/10

It was carried by its I.P that it pretty much wasted, you never really feel like your a student at hogwarts and it mostly just feels like the normal dime a dozen open world games that we get from various publishers multiple times a year

Yeah a 7/10 at best.

I did think it was nice to have the Hogwarts castle and grounds, which were pretty neat. Hogsmead and the village was great as well, but it did get a bit... cliched with the game design beyond that. The story-telling was a bit jumpy too.

Yeah cause they are good and interesting. Not complete milquetoast like Hogwarts is. The only thing it has going for it is the IP behind it and filled with fan service. Everything else is so generic it might as well not even exist.

I thought the setting was fantastic and the gameplay was pretty good. Especially the flight mechanics. One of the best open world games I've played this year. Dead Island 2 was also surprisingly great.

For the most part, this. It's fun to fly around for a short while, but most of the countryside beyond Hogwarts(Hogsmeade to an extent as well) is just sort of there. So the draw is mostly the Hogwarts setting, and flinging spells about.

Couldnt disagree more with people calling it mid, or dismissing the incredible HP fan service. You cant just take away the IP factor.

But the year was too stacked for it to be a real contender. I had a great time with it personally, flying on the broom is the best travelling in any open world game Ive played.

Well it was already GOTY for people like you just because it triggered the left on Twitter, so it could have been Gollum and people would cry about woke cancelling a clear GOTY contender. You'll just ignore that every major website hyped the game and that their reviews weren't "0/10 Rowling is a TERF"

No, don't project your blind partisanship onto others. I explictly added a condition with room for nuance. (it could be fair, or could be not fair, depending on the game selection)

If you can't handle a neutral stance it's a sign you're extreme.

That's for Game of the Year specifically, though.

TC is saying that Howgarts didn't get nominated in any category at all, not just the main GOTY category.

While it's understandable to not get on the main GOTY list, other hits like Armored Core 6, Diablo 4, and Starfield didn't make it either, not getting nominated in any secondary category either starts looking suspicious.

It actually was a great game...for one playthrough and that's part of the problem when you have 4 houses to pick from. The house you pick doesn't matter at all which even if you throw out the source material it should have had a much larger shaping of the narrative than just how your commons and one specific house related robes look. The comments on your house are middling at best after the first week and you make the exact same friends no matter which house you choose and aside from Sebastian none of them really felt fleshed out at all. In fact the Ravenclaw guy only appears twice and you never interact with him again even if you yourself are a Ravenclaw. Plus the dialogue choices seem to imply a morality system that's just never used. There's literally no consequence for using the unforgivable curses which is profoundly odd given how much of a big deal the books made out of that. Also the lack of classes just felt underwhelming. It's like you have 2-3 classes with each professor and call it good. Granted I didn't want them to take away from the exploration because that was great...mostly (at times tedious actually) the classes were one of the more important part of the books both for exposition and character development and idk world building in general. The first class nails this because you actually compete with another student and the others just fall flat in that regard.

TLDR: It's actually great for a single playthrough but doesn't have any replayability and fails to deliver on some narrative components you would expect for a Harry Potter game but does offer a decent combat system and a lot of open world exploration if you like getting lost in that. So of course it's not GOTY.

Literally nobody talked about this game to the point where I forgot it released this year. Same as how barely anybody talks about GOW Ragnarok and it's not quite been a year yet. I think games that nobody cares about after a negligible amount of time was probably not as good of a game as people thought at the time, or just bad, really.

Well, there's a lot of reason to believe that a bunch of content was cut from the game. As you pointed out, it is really noticeable with Ravenclaw. Amit sort of shows up for one mission, and is otherwise just there around the school for astronomy stuff. The Ravenclaw unique mission was also the shortest and dullest: search cubbies in the owlry.

But more generally there are vestiges of crime and/or punishment in the game which were dropped for release. Moon talks about having to sneak around people's homes at night while invisible to track down Demiguise statues, but in the final game trespassing only occurs during, like, two quests, after which the zones open up for free exploration immediately when the quest objective updates as you leave them.

The classes you attend also get shorter and more forgettable as the game progresses. You go from antics in the classroom with pre-class and post-class chat, minigames, and some development for tertiary class mates, to non-interactable and unvoiced montages that last for 5-10 seconds.

So there will always be the question of what the game could have been if the developers had time to finish things the way they wanted.
