REEEEEEEEEEE!!

I'm gonna cry. It's a lift top coffee table and the screws for one side of the metal hinge are too small for the threaded insert somehow, despite being normal on the other side.

Did you tighten all of the other screws already? If so, maybe try to loosen them a bit?

It's weird because the issue is the screws to hold the hinge in are TOO small. They just slide fully into the threaded insert and aren't able to be tightened like the other 3 sides. Those inserts were also preinstalled into the boards.

Can you pop the one of the inserts out and take it to a hardware store?

Do this. But also call, complain, and force them to give you some of your money back so you're basically getting a discount.

I could try after I get home from work but I think they are bored into the wood so I would destroy the panel if I tried to get them out. A friend suggested using thread seal tape to wrap around the screw.

Thread tape could work, but as cheap as it is I would take the screw to a hardware store too. Match the thread type and buy like the next few sizes up.

Are you sure you used all the right screws in all the right places?

This kind of thing has happened to me before, thanks to my lack of ability to notice the difference between two almost, but not quite, identical screws.

Not to be snarky, but if it takes 4hours to put together one coffee table, this/general user error is the most likely cause.

Either way, just take one of the screws from the other end to a hardware store and buy a new one for less than a buck. Or beat your head against the wall and slowly disassemble until you find the mistake.

Yes. I tried using a screw from the other side that would tighten and on this side it just slides in.

Fill up the hole with wood glue, wait for it to dry, make your own better screw receptacle.
