I just started getting into anime again. It's been like 15 years since I watched anime with any kind of regularity. There is a lot I've missed, obviously. Recommendations are welcome, but I currently have these series on my list (in no particular order):

Demon Slayer
Akame Ga Kill
Assassination Classroom
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Gurenn Lagann
The Big O
Elfen Lied
Samurai Champloo
Steins;Gate
Shadowstar Naru Taru
Kaze no Stigma
Black Lagoon
Lupin the Third
Trigun
Wolf's Rain
Blue Gender
Witch Hunter Robin
Scryed

Some of these I have seen before, some I know of, and some are completely new to me.

The first anime I'm watching is Konosuba. I'm going into it basically blind. I've heard the name a lot, but I know nothing about the series. Konosuba spoilers below

Plot summary: A pathetic guy (Kazuma) dies, and the goddess/spirit guide Aqua lets him resurrect in a fantasy world ruled by a demon king. This is that isekai stuff people are always talking about!

I just finished episode 5. It's got some good humor. Though the kid sorceress getting turned on from using her magic is a bit weird. The crusader is fucked in the head. I like how they gave Kazuma an ability that's not overpowered, but can still cause stuff to happen and progress the plot (he can use Steal, which steals a random item off his target. He usually gets girl's panties, but he also managed to steal a magic sword)

I am enjoying how the badass, scary doom knight guy is actually pathetic. He makes a big speech in a deep voice, gets hit by magic, and then rolls around on the ground screaming like a bitch. Hilarious.

Yeah, I missed Samurai Champloo when it was airing on Cartoon Network, but I've heard it's amazing.

For something a bit different, try the first season of Chihayafuru. It's ostensibly about a sport that you easily may not have heard of, and it takes a bit to really get the rules, but it ends up being very enjoyable. There's 3 seasons, but I'd say it's practically guaranteed to get a 4th, though the gap between 2 and 3 was very large.

I'm not usually into sports anime, but maybe I'll check it out.

I'll watch it at some point. I liked it when I saw it before, but I was an edgy teenager at the time so maybe I'll feel different about it now.

I'll suggest a few that I've enjoyed.

Serial Experiments Lain

Lain is lead down a path that takes her into the Wired where she discovers many disturbing things, like the line between reality and the Wired are fading and... other versions of herself? Or are they? It's hard to give a basic summary of this series.

The young girl is given a halo and grows wings of her own.

Back to Konosuba

The way they introduced Wiz (Whiz?) was really lame. They did like a ten second flashback to fighting a lich in a graveyard, instead of having an actual episode about it? Unless it's from a movie or some thing that I missed. Oh well.

<_< My stupid ass was all panicked on how this was gonna end in 2 episodes. There's a second season.

The Wiz backstory never got adapted from the light novel I believe. Just probably couldnt fit it within the ten episodes they had.

Do note there is a canon movie that takes place after season 2, and season 3 is coming up in a couple months. Theres also a Megumin prequel if youre interested. Personally I wasnt a huge fan of it since I dont think Megumins enough to carry a show on her own.

Also two OVAs, one after each season.

Honestly, Konosuba was one of the few popular anime that I couldn't get into. To each their own, I guess.

Anyway, into the recs:

  • Freiren (this was suggested already, but seconded)
  • Eighty Six
  • Monster
  • Ascendence of a Bookworm
  • So I'm a Spider, So What?
  • Spy x Family
  • Dr Stone
  • Jujutsu Kaisen
  • One Punch Man
  • Mob Psycho 100
  • Solo Leveling
  • Psycho Pass
  • My Hero Academia
  • Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
  • Code Geass
  • Death Note
  • The Daily Lives of High School Boys
  • The Disastrous Life of Saiki K
  • Haikyuu
  • Blue Lock

#18 mentioned One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100. Those are from the same creator so if you like one, you'll probably like the other. I can only recommend the first season of OPM though.

Personally my favorite isekai is Reincarnated as a Slime. Pretty fun even if it falls in the "horribly overpowered" standard. Not sure if it will pick up and continue and doesn't stop at a great spot sadly.

Ranking of Kings was a pretty good fantasy show I felt, decent at keeping you guessing.

If you're interested in dipping your toe into Gundam, Iron Blooded Orphans is a separate setting in no way linked to other Gundams.

I'll second Spy X Family as well, but I think a season is ongoing?

A lot of my anime time lately has been going to One Piece so I'm probably forgetting a lot...

I like Slime too, but yeah it's been on break for a while and I'm not sure if it will continue. Same reason I don't typically recommend Overlord.

I keep meaning to check this one out, but forget about it. I'll have to add it to my queue.

Nah, the second season finished in December. So TC is good to go until season 3 comes around

Thanks for the list, I'll check them out. A few of I've heard of on there. I likely won't watch Death Note. I've read it a few times and enjoyed it, the anime just doesn't appeal much to me.
