Everyone says that scene is sad but I giggled. There's probably something wrong with me.

It was a good movie overall but I feel like the rest of the film didn't quite live up to the strength of that intro.

The first 10 minutes of Up is a better love story than most full length Hollywood movies.

The beginning was heart-wrenching, but I didn't care much for everything afterward. For some reason I was really bothered by how unrealistic some parts of the movie were, and the floating house wasn't even one of them. It was things like the villain somehow still being alive despite being like 40 years older than the protagonist when he was a child and assaulting a person of the state and also kidnapping a child while not getting arrested when getting back.

I just turned it off after the beginning. I don't even care what happens in the rest of the movie.

I've never understood how that first ten minutes is enough for people. Like the first segment is really good, but without the last fourth of the movie it just seems like misery porn. Like people say that first segment can be its own movie, but it literally ends with Carl lost and grieving alone.

On a similar note, an alarming amount of people were upset about that Up short about Carl going on his first date since Ellie passed, like he was being unfaithful to her. Really feels like some people would just prefer widows to die alone and miserable than move on.

Why didnt they just adopt a kid after she found out she was barren?

They could have probably even gotten a baby to use all that baby stuff with.

Nah I like sad endings, but not when the take-away is so negative, especially for a kids movie. I just think a movie called "Up" kinda has to be uplifting. The entire movie's still sad in its own way anyways.

Ratatouille, Wall-E and Up came out right after I was past that whole "Pixar movies are for babies and I don't watch baby stuff anymore!" stage as a teenager and man what a great run of movies those three were.

Damn Toy Story 3 right after those too.

It's not like adoption is some easy process either.

But it's also not relevant for the movie and story they wanted to tell.

I never got the emotional reaction to the opening that a lot of people did. It seemed too obvious or something. It was like someone telling you "this man has a backstory that is very sad" and you're supposed to feel it too. Plus most of their story wasn't even sad, it was just punctuated with disappointment and eventual tragedy. So I kinda just rolled my eyes at the beginning. The part that gets me is just before the climax when Carl finds the adventure book and sees all their photos and Ellie's final message for him. That hit me way harder.

They were a middle class white married couple in the 1960s. I bet they would have had 0 trouble getting any kid they could have wanted.
