called? Thinking about doing my own taxes for the first time ever. I'll probably use Turbo Tax. I just got 4 W2's cause last year I worked for 4 different employers but that's it. Don't got anything complicated going on. Didn't sell any stocks, didn't divorce, don't have my own business, etc.

My family has a financial advisor who does them for us. Plus gets back more than I ever would.

Also, idc how easy some people say it is to do, doing my own makes me anxious as fuck, so I feel so much more comfortable not having that on my shoulders.

Unless you have a lot of businesses or complex things, I would think it's easy to do your own. You just have to enter the w2s, which is very simple.

Is there a list/checklist some where that tells us all of the things we should include? I put 0 in the tax thingy for my paycheck so I should always get a refund but I am scared I forget something that I gotta file and then get fined for that mistake

It's very easy with Turbotax, should take you two hours tops if that's all the paperwork you have. Depending on how fast you type could be as short as 15 mins.

Overpay if you are so worried. Penalties are based on taxes owed (and unpaid) by the due date. Assuming you filed on time, you shouldn't worry too much unless you are doing something egregiously wrong

The deductions and credits you are entitled to vary from year to year. It's not likely you got a smaller refund because of who did the taxes, moreso just because you may have had a different situation from one year to another.

For instance normally you have to itemize deductions to claim charitable donations but for a year or two everyone qualified automatically for a 1-for-1 credit up to a certain amount even if claiming the standard deduction

I work at a major state university. The accounting class offers to do it for free. You work with 2 students, one upper class student and one lower class student, then the professor reviews every one. I utilize this benefit and have for the last 25 years since I started working for the university and knew about it.

"tax professional", by literal definition: it is their profession to prepare taxes. In reality, it's just people off the street who work at these turbotax or h&r blocks or whatnot. their job is to not make mistakes, but they cannot advise you on the best way to prepare taxes.

going with an actual professional is the best, but they are expensive.

or you could just be like my friend. he's never filed taxes in 16+ years.

Any other income, including interest from bank accounts. Not likely to cause a serious problem if you forget about this but technically still required to report it.

If you're using a tax preparation software it should walk you through each scenario

Even then the process is so simple.

No clue why idiots want taxes taught in school. It takes 30 minutes to file taxes for 90% of America.

Reporting income is easy if you have a steady job; most high school students can do it.

More difficult part is knowing what deductions are available to you, as this vary greatly from person to person.

I hate doing taxes not because it's hard, but because it's pointless.

Government already knows how much money you owe or are owed, but they make you do it anyways to satisfy people who work in the tax business. Now we have automated programs that do it for you. Now all money you paid for TurboTax goes straight towards CEOs and other lobbyists.
