Yes it is. Something tells me this show is going to have a higher rating then the TV show which was Y7 and really couldn't get away with much. It had to be creative and was better for it.

So the genocide is okay to show but not Sokkas sexism which is literally part of his arc

Plus yeah I agree it's better to not show, it's better to just reference it happened, not even out of censorship but out of narrative

I've never seen the show, but others have said that it was only one episode. If it's contained in a single episode, it isn't really an arc.

It kinda stinks that it gives the implication, intentional or otherwise, that a bigot can never change their ways and that a good person can never fall into bigotry. If you pretend that saints are always saints and sinners are always sinners, you never get a person a reason to change.

But I understand not wanting to have a sexist as one of the primary cast members. It's Netflix, so they're probably banking on a 60% female audience anyway.

literally nothing these showrunners say have made me hopeful for the show.
But at the same time, we had to make it a serialized Netflix drama, which meant it couldn't just be for kids. It had to also appeal to the people who are big fans of Game of Thrones.

The people who watched the original series are now in their late 20s/early 30s. If fine to appeal to that audience and the mature content we now prefer.

The cartoon wasnt going away with that on Nickelodeon.

Why do people think they won't give him a different arc? Why can't he have a different flaw he over comes?

People need to stop being so nitpicky. You can make some character changes and still get the core of the characters correct. Look at live action One Piece. You can strike a balance.

It seems that people wanted to find a reason to hate the live action avatar so badly they take a small change they heard about and thong a whole character is now completely derailed and be boring and "without flaws" because of it.

Drama queens. Maybe the show will suck, maybe it will be good. How about we watch it first. My favorite show of 2023 was one I knew would suck up to the moment it aired. My experience with LA One Piece has taught me to never judge something before it airs, never dismiss something before actually giving it a fair chance. Always have hope they will get it right, thia time.

Overcoming his sexism isn't even Sokka's main or only character arc. It was a small part of the character. Yet now people are pretending its his defining characteristic that without he would be a hollow show of hos former self. Sorry it feels like people are reaching for anything to complain about and because they have nothing substantial they grabbed what ever tiny change they could find and blew it up to being huge.

Its nonsense.

'This Is a Remix, Not a Cover'

Hoo boy, I can see it now: Aang visits the Southern Air Temple, combing through the somber ruins of history long abandoned. In a burst of childish enthusiasm and chases a flying lemur into a tattered tent, only to find...a ghostly figure in a black hooded robe. "The Whispers have decreed this timeline altered..." it hisses before flying away. Though inexperienced in the spiritual arts, he can feel a tremendous change has happened. He walks outside the tent to find the Air Temple bustling with life; Air Nomads swirling around on air scooters, the skies teaming with flying bison. The Hundred-Year War is now a thing of fiction, a burden for a different timeline. The Gaang spends the rest of Season 1 chillaxing on Kangaroo Island.

The sexism by itself isn't a huge part of his character but it's a part of his general feelings of inferiority compared to the others combined with bad habits he grew up with in a traditionalist society and you do lose something by removing that.

It's a pretty important aspect of his character in the first season of the show. No reason to deny that. Also no good reason to leave it out.

Avatar never called to me, but I do feel bad for the fans and original series creators. It's very disheartening to have a film and a streaming service series which both miss the mark of the show's original intent.

I'm being presumptuous on that last part, since the series isn't out yet, but that deleted post talking about Aang's character development being omitted to streamline the narrative seems to be pretty telling.
