What in the world happened to that huge-ass army that was camped outside of Moonrise and left as you were fighting Ketheric? You get to Baldur's Gate before them, but then they just... never show up? And nothing is ever said about it.

I think it depends what you do.

I had (major ending spoiler) Gale blow himself up to kill the Brain so I didn't even have a final battle.

Ketheric is dead, Orin is too busy cosplaying in the city to do anything useful, and Gortash only got coronated like an hour ago.

I'm guessing the army is waiting for some signal from Gortash but the whole Netherbrain shit happens before that.

So there's now just a leaderless group of gnolls and goblins and ogres and gods-know-what-else just roaming the countryside between Moonrise and the city? That doesn't sound great.

Its an offscreen invasion. They invade the city and Gortash saves the city with the Steel Watch and becomes a hero.

That's pretty much the fate of every such "army". They are only together because of a strong leader they fear. Once that leadership is gone they just kinda drift apart.
