I stopped watching South Park around 2006, so I'm curious if I should consider any of the newer episodes.
Scott Tenorman Must Die Make Love, Not Warcraft Douche and Turd 200/201 Scott Tenorman is pretty much the Cartman episode. Warcraft is I think South Park's best episode chasing current trends. Butters' Very Own Episode
Scott Tenorman Must Die Trapped In the Closet Fishsticks BVOE is a great episode to introduce people to South Park with to see if they'll like it, both then and probably now still. It also sparked the rise of Butters. STMD is the South Park-fanbase pick -- even if I sometimes feel that is an insular pick compared to other episodes, the show is so mercurial and this is where the most unity is so you gotta respect it. TITC was brilliant, informative, controversial, and marked the end of Isaac Hayes working with the show. Fishsticks is their best episode. Douche and Turd ...unsure on the next 2. Scott's the clear #1 "South Park" standout but Douche and Turd is the #2 and reflects where South Park is at its strongest - political and cultural commentary. to this day the giant douche vs turd sandwich comparison exists and the episode created a term called "South Park Republicans" to reflect the importance of that episode in the actual presidential election. hard to not have it up there as it was the defining episode which made South Park more than just dirty jokes and offensive humor and into something that was socially and culturally important. tentatively for the last 2 going with: Where My Country Gone? Band in China Country Gone is the initial Garrison as Trump parody trying to close the Canada border and his policy of fuck them all to death. even Matt and Trey went "well shit we didn't expect this" as the election continued and they made him more insane and orange. for the more modern day politics, it stands out. Band in China also reflects this but goes even more out of the way; it successfully did what 200/201 wanted to do but against China. it laughed at the NBA, Disney, got Mickey Mouse into a full on villain, had Pooh Bear parodied and tortured, and directly criticized China's influence over the rest of the world. if there's any modern day classic that holds up to the test of time, it's that one. that episode got South Park as a whole banned in China, it limited buyers of the show because you can't do business in China if you own South Park, and is used by people in Hong Kong/Taiwan (well, was in HK's case). honorable mentions to Warcraft, Chinpocomon, Safe Space, 200/201, All About Mormons, and Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics. first two are clearly animated really well, Safe Space was their real entry into current political correctness issues and eventually got PC Principal as a character, and 200/201 is infamous for Comedy Central's involvement as well as all the call-backs. lastly Hankey was initially in my picks but can't in good faith not include the China episode. probably the best of the Hankey episodes and showed their musical chops, which later on became the South Park movie, Book of Mormon, and a couple episodes too. All About Mormons is an interesting catch-all in that it inspired Book of Mormon directly, also had the animation chops as the other high level ones, and made everyone, everyone laugh at Mormonism for the absurdity in the storytelling. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. ... Another one that deserves a lot of credit no ody's mentioned yet (including me, whoops): You're Getting Old. That episode threatened everyone that we could lose the show around the time the Book of Mormon blew up, and it was felt. Ooh I'm in the middle of a re-watch over the past couple months! First time watching it in like 10 years. I'm only halfway through season 13 though.
I'm going to pick the episodes I think about most often in day-to-day life, that are also really good episodes. Make Love, Not Warcraft: It's just so cool. I still play WoW and we still reference this of course. Good Times With Weapons: The switching back and forth between Anime mode is genius and amazingly well done, especially the music. AWESOM-O: Butters/Cartman is my fav part of the series and this is my fav one. Great song!! The Simpsons Already Did It: Good use of professor chaos, the sea monkey stuff is wild, inspiring message about creativity. Really wanted to get the Mormon episode in too, but couldn't fit it in. Gonna talk down some other episodes: "Trapped In The Closet" the scientology stuff is good and interesting, but the actual Closet gag is pretty thin. "Scott Tenorman Must Die" isn't as fun when you already know what happens, IMO. Still great though. "The Return of the Fellowship..." fell flat for me the first time, when I didn't know LOTR much. (Now I love it though!) "The Losing Edge" I freaking love this episode and think about it often, but it is mostly the same two jokes for 22 minutes: the boys wanna lose baseballl, and Randy loves to fight the other parents. --- People who don't finish their sentences I'm a Castlevania superfan!
