Yeah it's pretty common to get some form of plastic surgery over there. I read that in Korean culture, beauty isn't what you're born with but it's what you make it to be. One of my coworkers literally traveled to South Korea to get plastic surgery because it's cheaper and less time consuming than getting on here in the states.

From what I've heard its standard practice for almost every girl there when they come of age.

But it would be nice to get confirmation from anyone that actually lives there and knows the culture >_>

I don't live there, but I do live in Koreatown, and I've been told this quite a few times by dual citizens. South Korea is the only place more materialistic than the USA.

The vast majority of South Koreans get their eyes done, men and women. Wouldn't surprise me if it was 90% or more of the population. A smaller number get their nose done as well.

Eye surgery is supposedly really common. To me the girl with the natural eyes in the video is prettier.

It's not just women, but a lot of guys get plastic surgery there to. I remember seeing pictures from the mid 2010s of a plastic surgeon that had these huge pillars in his office filled with jawbone shavings.

As someone who lives in Korea I'd say you see it rather frequently. Before coming out here I took a bunch of Korean language/studies courses and every now and then lookism was a common topic when talking about social issues. Usually it's double eyelid or nose jobs that I see

I watch a lot of k-dramas and while its all fantasy(even the reality based ones), there is a lot of Korean culture WITHIN the dramas and plastic surgery is either demonized or looked at with awe depending on what's done.

I think too much done will cause a lot of gossip and hate while a little work is usually necessary.

South Koreans seem extremely materialistic too, especially as a norm.

A lot of the time I think they have surgery around their eyes and you can pretty much tell who or who didn't. I think 2PM's Junho is what comes to mind from someone who didn't get surgery on his eyes, or if he did, I don't exactly know what it was. I'm not an expert on plastic surgery.

There's a good amount of people you can't tell. Some people here are simply just looking unreal and some get some very fitting work done

I dont know if those before/after article pictures of women undergone eyelid surgery are real or they can be posted on here, but they're very disconcerting and surreal, if nothing else.

Just seems unnecessary and painful.

Just thought of something regarding this, there should be another movie in the caliber of Parasite that addresses this kinda stuff and serves as a looking glass into that kinda culture too

Not just the women, and yes it is common. I heard an interview with a Korean doctor talk about how common offices for plastic surgery are in South Korea. I think he likened it to Starbucks, if I remember correctly.

I have nothing against it. Nature gave humanity intelligence and we're supposed to use it to tell Nature to go fuck itself in everything except our physical insecurities holding us back from a higher degree of self-esteem and positive self-image? If it's poorly done then that's a shame and the risk the patient takes, however I've nothing against people wanting to have the best reflective body of who they desire to be.

I have been to a lot of places more materialistic than the US. US seems to think it's some kind of aberration, but it's basically normal for an OECD country. China is probably the most materialistic country I have ever been too, but Japan and South Korea are both very materialistic too. I think people mistakingly believe materialism is some cultural disease that came out of modern society and not just humans being humans.
