I generally prefer self checkout unless I'm getting a bunch of the same item.

There's no way you're faster at scanning than somebody who's been doing it 8 hours per day for 20 years.

at many retailers near me, self checkout is not. Especially after 7pm.

Nobody is forcing you to use the self checkout.

Actually Walmart does after a certain time they close out all their registers.

They're still not forcing you to use the self checkout.

In the UK, a full trolley of food is around 250 ($300). I've literally passed my trolley to a member of staff and walked out empty handed when I've realised all the checkouts were closed. Their loss I guess.
