Tipping culture- Paying wages for staff that the owners cant seem to do. A $100 steak resulting in a $20 tip as composed to a $10 burger resulting in a $2 tip. Doesnt make sense.

Self checkout- Having to scan and bag your own groceries in a small limited space while employees stare at you so you dont steal. The reality is just so the company can save money on paying its employees while prices stay the same.

Which one is worse?

I've never heard anybody complain about self checkout.

Though it's pretty stupid that placing a bag down makes the machine say, " unexpected item in bagging area".

Tipping culture. I tip, but I'd much rather the restaurant pay the employees decently.

Self-checkout easily beats waiting in line, especially because someone didn't have enough money for their purchase or wants to fight about an expired coupon or whatever. Also, a lot of cashiers sucks at bagging, if item arrangement matters to you, you're probably better off bagging it yourself.

You're okay with paying the same prices and doing the work yourself at the same time? Have you ever seen a self checkout during rush hour? Those lines are super long.

I don't think of the food prices as related to the employee wages lol. It's really not that much work. I like getting to keep my headphones in and not socialize. And it's not really long near me. Stop going at rush hour.

The comparison is more of the corporate or business itself fucking over the customers than it is about the wages of the staff.

I dont like self checkout for these reasons:
-if I'm buying alcohol, it takes forever for my ID to get checked
-half the time, prices for goods at my grocery store aren't always updated in their system. takes forever to get someone to cross check with their catalogue, and then change prices
-if I buy more than 10 things, a pop up will appear saying "Please wait for attendant to verify number of items" which is another wait

so, 9 times out of 10 I will wait in line and go to a cashier, especially for the price discrepancies because my budget is very tight, and the cashiers usually know that the price is wrong right away OR they have something at their register with all of the updated prices, so its a lot faster.

but I will say self checkout is great if you're only grabbing a couple of things. my grocery store has a deli inside, and they make prepackaged sandwiches, chicken tenders or wings meals, rotisserie chickens, fruit bowls...you name it. I'll stop there on my lunch break every now and then and use the self checkout. Cheap, healthy-ish, and faster than fast food drive thru.

Self-checkout during rush hour> actual cashier
During non-rush hour times, so petty whiner is going to hold up the line over something petty. People can't argue with a machine, so they'll have to just move over to the customer service desk at the end.
9/10 times self-checkout is more convenient and quicker for me. The only time it's inconvenient is when the produce item is missing a label and not in the system (has only happened one time with produce) or when I'm buying alcohol, since a person needs to check my ID.
If a person can buy their own groceries and take them home, they can go through a self-checkout. Unless the user has a disability, it's a negligible amount of work to scan one's own items on the user's part. And, if someone has a disability, they could just ask for assistance.

Self-checkout is only bad if there's a lack of cashiers for people with large loads. Tipping culture is always bad and should be phased out for proper hourly pay and higher normal prices. Even if the price is literally the same, I wouldn't care.

Tipping culture by far. Pay your own damn staff. Also absolutely no one is entitled to a tip, look at the company you work for. But I digress because the people who defend it tend to be the people who dont want tipping culture to go away. Either stuck on their moral high horse, or they have skin in the game.

I understand the complaints surrounding self checkout, but it doesn't bother me. I used to work retail, so I know how to self checkout pretty quick and problem free. It only annoys me when an item doesn't scan forcing me to waste time waiting for someone to help me.

I work in a store with self checkouts. Not once have I heard a non-boomer complain that they exist. A few other people who personally don't use them, but whenever people complain about them simply existing, it's always a boomer.

Same goes for card-only lanes for that matter. People of all ages sometimes end up in one with cash by mistake, but boomers are the only ones who ever throw a fit about it.

I'll take your word for it, becasue I have no reason not to, but I've never been to a Walmart, Target, or Stop & Shop (the 3 main places I shop that have self checkout) where there wasn't at least 2-3 open registers.

Going to a self checkout line clearly stating that it is for people with 10 items or less, and having 15+ items is most certainly not a system problem.

I never use a self checkout. I've left a shopping cart full of food and walked out before.

On the other hand, we don't really have a tipping culture in the UK. I've never tipped in a bar (and was never tipped in 4 different bar jobs). I've never tipped in a cafe. Mostly in a decent restaurant I just round up to the nearest 5.00 and that's it.

So both are unacceptable.

As a consumer I prefer self-checkout. As someone whose employment is based around tipping, I'd prefer a living wage, though it would need to be an actual living wage, not just the bullshit min wage the federal & red states have.
