It was good, but almost felt too safe? Maybe it's because a season finale had to become a series finale? They were clearly setting up more Protomolecule stuff, but that side plot just stopped with evil Martian man on Laconia telling Marco he was no longer useful to them, and a weird zombie child.

Marco got exactly what he deserved and Holden continued to do the most Holden things ever. I liked when Amos kinda broke the fourth wall talking about how Holden goes back and forth between stupid decisions and saving the entire human race.

Gotta read the books there, the show stopped with like 3 of them left to cover.

Did you read the books?
If not, the reason they stop here in the show is that there is an almost 30 year time jump in the books that takes the remaining books to resolve. So rather than start that plot they just let the show end prior to the time jump.

The Expanse is sort of a weird case as well. I love the show, but I also love the books, despite the fact that the show deviates significantly from the books in a few cases, but when it does it's usually for the better.
The most notable is the character of Ashford, who in the books was a crappy officer who cracked under the pressure of being trapped in the ring space and became the villain of the book.

it's a shame Cas Anvar's character was killed off. Too bad he turned out to be a creep IRL. I really liked his character

Ashford was definitely a top tier character.

I knew about Cas Anvar's awfulness going into the series and I still loved Alex. I found it humorous how unceremoniously they ended him. That had to be a miserable experience for everyone working on the show.

I thought it was wild that Ashford purposely put Drummer into place to get paralyzed and didn't see any consequences for it.

Im on season 4. I like everything about the show except Holden and most anything to do with the protomolecule. Its a top tier world setup.

When I was reading the first book, it was the usual "chapter here chapter there" sort of book.

Then they go to Eros and I finish the book in one sitting.

To me the Mars Earth Belt dynamics at the start of the show were fascinating. I would have loved just living in the deadlock between those before everything gets upended.

Yeah I enjoyed the grounded realistic sci-fi politics early on and then it was just yet another sci-fi RPG campaign.
