That's with a paid off house too, I hope I'm that poor when I retire, I have a 401k, Roth IRA, and other savings and investments. I have about 30 more years of work to do.

$4 a meal for meals on wheels? They'd come around to my grandmas apartment complex when I was a kid and we didn't pay anything. Just go to the truck and get a styrofoam platter.

Paid off house might not be worth much as you think fyi.

And all it takes is 1 medical problem.

I'm so glad my house is paid off. I have no bills except required monthly bills. I live in a pretty cheap cost of living area of the Midwest and have a pretty good job. I'm just stockpiling cash and investments right now until I retire.

I turn 48 in about 2 months. The only thing keeping me working really is insurance coverage. I have awesome insurance through my job that is pretty much free and has been the last 25 years. If I could retire tomorrow but keep my insurance I would do it. It won't be money keeping me at my job but insurance.

I'd love to retire in about 10 years. Again though insurance will probably keep me working.

The alternative to a paid off house is paying rent or a mortgage until you die. Which is most people's largest bill.

Something tells me this guy can't be doing all that terrible. Not sure what he's getting in SS but the average is like $1700 a month. No house payment, sounds like the car may be paid off, wife works and should get SS when she retires. My parents are in a similar situation and aren't exactly frugal.

No mention of retirement funds. If you haven't saved for retirement its probably a bad idea to retire.

And that is why insurance is through your employer.
