Started the Manga in 2021 since Kentaro Miura died. Finally finished reading all 375 chapters so far.

This was amazing. Just wow.

I admit once the magic was started to get fleshed out and the trolls appeared I lost interest(thats why it took me about 2 years to read it) but even then I started to embrace the new world, and world of magic and stuff that Berserk introduced, fuck it im onboard now. Just still Shrieke isnt my thing, only character I dont care for.

Characters are pretty phenomenal.

This seriously rivals A Song of Ice and Fire as my favorite Fantasy series now. Both unfished and about 2 more arcs to finish before being done(Berserk New author says 10 more years, ASOIAF 2 more books). Ugh. Now for the long wait.

Too bad for the pirate/island saga. Imagine having to read through that for a whole DECADE.

wait, the person who took over after Miura (RIP) said it'll take 10 years for Berserk to finish?

but yea, great series.

my only real issue with it is what happened with Griffith's character, after, you know, and the chapters focusing on him later in the series got to be pretty old.

I say that as someone who had Griffith as their favorite character.

Ugh the pirates was by far the worst arc/filler arc, yeah the ship overall sucked. But things are looking good now, Rickert and guts are linked up again exactly what we needed for the actual plot to move forward now. All the side stuff is taken care off and we can get back to the main plot.

Yea the Griffith parts kinda are uninteresting cause there is no tension. Griffith is a god basically so no fear or emotion is shown for him, he basically is just a monotone character now. So every stake is kinda just a yawn. Its cool seeing him kill fantasy creatures but again without tension or anything it gets old and boring really fast.

Well have to see what effect the moonlight boy has on him going forward as its the only time he has shown any emotion atall, crying a bit, but still mostly monotone and stoic.

Story goes that Miura was playing a lot of idol games during that time and he neglected Berserk and also started another manga called Giganto Maxia. Kinda explains why so many young girl characters appear all of a sudden....

Yeah, he was apparently playing IdolM@ster and there was the ongoing joke about him and Togashi since Togashi had an apparent obsession with Dragon Quest but they were clearly both sick.

I hate that Shrieke has a crush on Guts. Farneese I understand, but Shrieke? Nah. Thats just dumb.

Shrieke overall just ugh, really hoping she dies soon and Farneese takes over as the witch, You know the whole master student trope, masters tend to die in stories so yea....hoping that happens soon cause this kid bores me.

I dont really dig the newest chapters, characters feel very different to me.

Havent watched the Manga, heard really bad things. Like huge case of people trying to tell their own story and not adapt the Manga. Like removal of characters and fantasy elements cause the directors dont like that part as much. Really bad. Kind of like Game of Thrones tbh.

About when? Story definitely felt different after the Conviction Arc. I think Miura has a different outlook I heard and basically moved away from Guts being an anti-hero and definitely moved him more towards being a hero. But its explained well in the world so I dig it.

But if your talking about after Studio Gaga took over after chapter 364, Im not seeing it.

I really enjoyed Guts character arc, but I really hate what was done with Casca and Griffith. Especially in the last few chapters

Hes making Guts suffer even more now by making him loosing sight in his only viable eye and not being able to wield the dragon slayer without the use of the Berserker Armor.

This is crazy. Never seen someone be put through this much struggle.

I get its an anti- violence story but goddamn thats alot of torture to a guy we love lol. We get it, pursuing the path of violence is destroying Guts body but damn give him a break.

I love it anyways though.

Hard to say, Im reading a localization and if you dont know what the original text is you can never be sure about it. It just feels weird somewhat.

Ehh I could never get into berserk
Tried a few times over the years. I guess it just too boring for me

I get the mood to catch up on Berserk every couple years, only to be at first pleasantly surprised at how little backlog I have to do but then it dawns on me how thats actually a bad thing.

Berserk is probably my favorite manga ever. I read it during a really low point in life and the story of a man struggling against all odds and managing to make it through even if it wasnt whole really helped me out.

This was a huge distraction for me to think about something else other than my loved one who passed away in November. Gotta think Miura for that for sure. Helped me get over my best fried/Lover who lost their life way too early at 34 (to a homeless guy ugh.)

I just watched the 90s anime and enjoyed that.

Ugh, we voted years ago to house these homeless people but the government refuses to do anything to help them, Now their bitter and attacking people just to get people to notice. Sorry for the rambling, continue the topic about Berserk.

All I know is angry angry things. And then being on a boat for about a decade (in Earth time, not in story time).

Glad you're liking it TC, but you have a lot of recency bias since you binged it so quickly. Imagine waiting for live releases on the pirate arc, or the sudden tonal shifts after the transition to digital, or the frustrating and constant redesigns of multiple characters -- these things are a lot easier to digest when you can read at your own speed, and not say waiting 3 fucking years for another boat chapter with more experimental line work changing how characters look and feel on the page because Miura was zooming in to 400-500x for pixel art.

He was spinning his wheels on it for years and what little was known about him, he was close to abandoning it for his other manga and started to actually resent the series for being all he did or thought about 24/7 for more than two decades. And it shows.

I'm on the island part now with the new girl character introduced. Yeah I agree, it is becoming a bit of a drag. I can't imagine how much worse it must've been for those waiting for each new chapter to release way back then.

If there's ever another anime adaptation in the future. I'd be fine if they cut out some of this filler in the Millennium/Fantasia arcs.

I assume there's a bunch of stuff, plot threads, and characters in Berserk that's not going to factor into the main overall plot? Though I'm not caught up yet on the current chapter, so I could be wrong and everything is connected in a way.

that is not what filler means

filler means an animation studio literally made it up to give time for more chapters to release

an arc that has less happening is not filler but fyi there is still things that happen in it like meeting certain characters and world lore

when Guts fights the sea god we see how the moonlight child is connected to Guts before it is revealed

In Berserk its not really filler, rather its more like meandering rather than having the main plot move forward.

Its really cause Miura can do whatever he wanted and has no editor or someone with power to tell him to stop this sequence your doing its boring, move the main plot ahead. Like in Fantasia it was all leading up to Rickert and Guts meeting and Casca being kidnapped, we literally heard in the last interview with Miura that Guts will be separated from the main party and be a solo struggler for awhile, and that still hasn't happened, and guts meeting Rickert again literally happened finally, but it took forever.

Berserk was the #1 Manga in Young Animal, the magazine its published in when Miura was alive. So he was king.

Hes like GRRM. Rather than the editor editing, its more like fanboying over what their writing and just letting everything slide. Well now we have this situation, a Manga that could have been wrapped up by like 350, have 10 years or so till its done according to the new author.
