Because most people are selfish, spiteful and want someone or something to blame for their shortcomings. Also joining his cult gives them a place to belong and gives these pieces of human garbage a sense of purpose, even if it is ass backwards and illogical.

Humans are by their very nature selfish, cruel, sadistic, hateful, and violent. That is just how we are as a species.

He just makes people embrace those aspects.

How is selfish false? Everyone has some degree of it, and that is perfectly healthy, but at the same time there are those who take it to extremes and victimize people because of their selfishness. The world wouldn't be in horrid state that it is in if selfishness wasn't prominent in it's people.

Yup. If the main minorities they hate were gone then they would turn back to "religious" facism and classism of their own kind. Dominance through force is literally the ideology facists live by. There is literally no end to "enemies" for people with this ill mentality.

He's grifting off of people fed up with the consequences of late-stage capitalism, and yet are too uneducated and/or too indoctrinated to realize where the source of their problems stem from. But yeah, misery loves company. They are the loudest silent minority in our nations history and will use any means to cheat, sow doubt and prevent access to voting. This is the Gop's dying breath so they'll celebrate criminal behavior and defy reality as long as they can. Trump is just their champion for this.

I heard recently that his supporters don't care about being right but about winning. Verbally "owning" people counts as winning, apparently.

Trump cultists don't see him as negative and hateful, they see him through Ben Garrison goggles as an athletic handsome demi-god who battles against evil and restores American pride.

They view the left as miserable whiners who are always complaining about racism and being unable to afford healthcare.

Isn't it just from the typical conservative/Republican playbook though? They're just more blatant and hateful about it. They had to tone it down in the past few decades since the segregation/Civil Rights era and now realize they don't have to hide their horrible views anymore because the media is on their side.

This is also part of the problem. Ever since Obama got elected, people have felt they needed to hide their views from fear of (justifiable) ostracization.

Then Trump came along and normalized degenerate behavior in a way that previous Republican politicians didn't. The bullshit was always there, Trump just galvanized it.

Because both he and the movement of ultra far right nationalism behind him are an existential threat to American democracy and world security.

That's just the bottom line overview...it's the endless corruption, the cruelty, the criminal cronies, and the incompetence.

Republicans had made hatred their brand for 50-odd years before Trump, it's just up until Trump it was generally understood actually campaigning on that was a death sentence, so things like pinning it on "the evils of communism" or advocating for states rights or whatever while at least pretending to have policy was what they'd actually do.

Trump showed that completely forgoing subtlety is not the career-ending move it had once been believed to be. He tapped into that hateful base America had done an incredibly poor job of actually silencing for 150+ years and encouraged the mask to not just get ripped off, the mask got slammed to the ground and stomped on. His base thinks of him as a superhero because he's the one guy in politics who would outright glorify their views, never at any point dancing around it.
