It's because of computers. The earliest video games came out in the 60's and were directly influenced by computers Now think of a world with out computers. So in history before the 1940s

At the height of Rumble Robots productions they were selling whole squadrons of robots of different sizes, which all had interactivity with each other via laser. I wanted them so badly as a kid, but as you can imagine, the equivalent of a dozen or so overly fancy RC cars with fists was expensive. The robots also came with collectable card packs, and the controller would read them to send commands for maneuvers you couldn't do with the controls alone, although it really was mostly making laser attacks "more powerful", or restoring health. You know, stat tracking.

I think I'd like a smaller equivalent of that system, though. Little rc dudes on a big fat board with enough programming to emulate different units, all controlled via signals and card commands.
