Getting to the credits is sometimes easier, sure, but by the time you're on the tenth sequentially unlockable difficulty, not a thing on the NES is even in the same league. Or the 100-boss boss rush that includes even the super bosses, conveniently sorted at the end for maximum screw you. Or the permadeath mode that requires you to go through the whole game without dying once. Or the achievement for finishing the whole game with no damage.

You can argue these things are optional, but playing the game at all is optional. Stopping a tenth of the way through doesn't make the game easy.

Most people tend to ignore bullshit difficulty levels. I beat DMC 1 on Dante Must Die, but some of the newer games have like Hell and Hell, where the enemies are harder than Dante Must Die and if you get hit once, you die. Thats just masochism.

Given the option, sure. But overall games are much more inclusive to how the modern gamer wants to play.

Lots of story mode options and I love it.

And this is coming from a Devil May Cry fanboy.

DMC1's DMD is tougher than the 4 or 5 on Hell and Hell.
See in 4 and 5 you have way more options and in 5 especially the enemies are incapable of fighting back. Plus you unlock Hell and Hell after beating DMD which also unlocks the infinite DT costumes.

I'm guessing you didn't give Hell and Hell a try because if you did you'd know that each time you start a mission you get three gold orbs next to your health bar for free.

Download wizardry 4 and let me know when you get out of the first room. Then you can come back and reissue your opinion on this subject.

*Contra enters the chat*
Well, I haven't actually played Contra, but I've played Super C, and Super C is a great example.

The only reason anyone would think it was hard is because they gave up on, say, their fifth or so try. The game is literally exactly the same every single time. I'm talking, the spawns, the attack patterns, it's all completely identical. The only skill you need to get through Super C is memory.

It's a far cry from modern games--especially indie ones--where you're expected to have femtosecond reaction times to a bunch of randomized stuff.

I'm not sure Metal Storm on the NES is even possible to complete without save states. Some of those later stages seem specifically designed to make children rage quit their Blockbuster rental

I feel like the hardest part in that one is the boss with the blocks and spikes. More a matter of training muscle memory than anything.

But to be fair, I did save state this game. Mostly because I had limited time to play it and wanted to get to the end.

Good luck. I did that, then a year later my friend and I took my PS2 to my nans for Thanksgiving and we were getting our asses whipped by Phantom on Normal.
