For election watchers, the congressional special election in New York was clearly this weeks marque contest. A House Republican leader, campaigning in the Long Island district, went so far as to argue, The nation is watching what happens here.

But as Democrats celebrated their success in the Empire State, there was another race election watchers were following in a neighboring state, which mattered, too. NBC News reported overnight:

Democrats won a state House special election in Pennsylvania on Tuesday night, preserving the partys narrow majority in the closely watched battleground state, The Associated Press projected. In the race for the open seat in the 140th state House District, Democrat Jim Prokopiak, a school board member in Bucks County, defeated Republican Candace Cabanas.

While those names wont be familiar to national audiences, one of the reasons the results stood out is the larger legislative context: Had the GOP candidate in this race prevailed, Democrats wouldve lost their narrow majority in the Pennsylvania state House.

But just as notable was the local geography. NBC News report added, The win in Bucks County a purple slice of the northern suburbs of Philadelphia was hailed as positive news by national Democrats, some of whom had viewed the contest as an early bellwether of the partys fortunes among suburban voters ahead of the 2024 election.

Note, in the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden won this district by roughly 10 points. In the special election, the Democratic candidate appears to have won by roughly 35 points.

Whats more, a Politico report noted that there have been six legislative special elections in Pennsylvania over the past year, and Democrats have won all of them.

Given the stakes, this Bucks County contest drew some national attention the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee reportedly invested more than $80,000 into the race and after Prokopiaks victory, the DLCC took a victory lap.

Bucks County voters represent a key part of the electorate that Democrats need to win over to build Democratic majorities across the country todays election signals the momentum behind Democrats agenda up and down the ticket, the DLCC said in a written statement.
Democrats and their voters should definitely keep this momentum up in time for the general election.

Don't let the polls make you feel apathetic. Instead, concentrate more on turning out the vote early and effectively. Also convince friends and family members to do the same.

Pennsylvania is weird state. A massive amount of the voters are independents, and there's closed primaries. If there were open primaries (and if they were an early state) Bernie might have won in 2016. A lot of those independents were braindead morons that switched from Bernie to Trump because they cared about having an outsider more than literally anything at all about actual platform.

A huge subset of independents heavily favored Trump in 2020. They were butthurt that they lost tips during covid shutdowns. However, everything changed when Roe was overturned. Now their reproductive rights were in danger. They were certainly willing to let trans people get genocided, but making it harder for them to get birth control is too far. With closed primaries, Republicans selected a full blown, unapologetic white supremacist (he goes to costume parties as a confederate soldier, and his campaign made an add specifically designed to run on Stormfront type websites, actual open white supremacy sites).

An with an outright white supremacist running for governor scaring the sociopathically selfish independents to vote blue, and a Muslim snake oil salesman dropping enthusiasm for republicans, Democrats did great in 2022 and are consistently looking good. We can also thank Trump's election fraud lie causing some Republicans to lose faith and stop voting.

Caution though, Nazis are still getting some seats on city councils and school boards.

Then we need to ensure they lose those positions too. We've seen what happened when people started taking school board positions more seriously after Moms for Libertines declared their intent to ruin public education.

Well said, and it's also important to note the Nazis like Doug Mastriano lost because they had their connections to the Jan 6th insurrection exposed, not all Nazis are as open and blatant.
