Kura Revolving Sushi Bar, a national chain. First time there. It was a pretty neat experience, where sushi came on conveyor belts and you just pick out what you want, and any drinks you order comes delivered by like a roomba robot.

When checking out on the tablet by the table, there was a tip option. What the fuck am I tipping for here? The robot?

Just because theres a tip prompt on the one-size-fits-all restaurant software doesnt mean you should leave a tip.

I've been to Kura as well. It's fun, although the sushi is pretty mid. I like the plate counter.

Waitstaff are usually supposed to kick some of the tips back to the cooking staff. The robots are probably hoarding it and building an army though.

How do those places know how much to charge you?

Like if you are getting it off a conveyor belt, how do they total up your bill?

Theres a plate counter. Each plate costs a flat fee. You can also use the tablet to order specialty items which have varying costs, and when you order the speciality item, it comes from a separate express conveyor belt.

Interesting system. I guess it makes sense that most items would cost the same amount so its easy to calculate.

At Genki Sushi they color code the plates and just ring it up that way which makes both getting the total and diving the bill very convenient.

Non alcoholic drinks come by robot, if you order sake an actual person comes to make sure you are of drinking age.

If you don't order alcohol then you don't need to tip then.

They count the plates. Some places have color coded plates, Kura everything is the same off the belt, but you can orde other things a la cart vis the touchscreen.

Conveyor belt sushi isnt a new thing. I went to some in Japan and in Hong Kong 20+ years ago. Pretty sure they have how to charge you down pat.

In Japan the screen just prompts asking if you are 20 years old, and you can just hit yes. Love the honor system. They still do have waitresses to come over at the end to tally up your plates though.

It's an option for if you called them for refills, since you requesr refills via staff instead of the touchscreen.

Won't lie, I go to Kura almost weekly. Absolutely love it. I spend about the same I normally do at a regular sushi place, but I can get a lot more variety.

We just got water, and water refills were handled by the robot (just got more cups*).
