The OG Unreal.

I played it when it was new, and it was a mind blowing experience for the time. It's the perfect example of storytelling through level design since there are almost no cut-scenes and minimal dialog. The world, the setting, the situation, the layout, the challenges, the item placement create the story instead of some bad exposition dumps in a cut-scene.

You still understand exactly what's going on, and the story unfolds as you play - I really really wish games would have iterated on this concept instead of elaborate mo-cap cut-scenes and high priced hollywood actors.
Amen.

It wouldn't be so bad if games weren't written so badly. Most of the people who write this crap seem to be flunky hacks who wouldn't actually be able to do environmental storytelling though so they're relegated to just aping Hollywood instead

The original Modern Warfare from 2007. Having that nuke go off and killing your character was unprecedented then.

Probably Quake. Wasn't the first FPS game I'd played but it was the one that really pulled me into that style of game.

Deus Ex, DOOM (2016) and Goldeneye are some of my other favourites.

Wolfenstein. Hidden doors, treasure, and a path of dead a nazis in front of you is all you need. And the ability to keep track of which doors and hallways you've been through, because everything looks the same and 100% is a must.

Final Doom? Why?
I think it hits the perfect balance of developer deviousness while still respecting the player's time and effort by virtue of (1) the less labyrinthine maps (compared to DOOM/DOOM II) and (2) the Casalis' fundamental understanding of DOOM's enemies and mechanics.

Less Labyrinthine? Half the levels in Final Doom feel like giant mazes. Hunted is literally a giant maze.

For TNT, maybe. Plutonia Experiment is generally fairly bite-sized.

I will give you Hunted, though.
