So I just finished Crisis Core to get prepared for Rebirth and I know Dirge of Cerberus is a sequel to VII but they show Weiss and Nero picking up Genesis and of course there's Weiss and Nero in Intergrade in Remake so they are obviously around...but I hear Dirge is terrible but wonder if I should play it or maybe hope for a remake/remaster...or just ignore it unless stated otherwise.

It's definitely the weakest of the FF7 Compilation, but I have a soft spot for it. Its final segments are genuinely pretty cool, but it's a bit of an uphill climb to get there.

It's also pretty short, so it's not like you're dropping a ton of time into it either. I'd cautiously recommend it

is it the gameplay or the story elements that people complain about? (or both?) Crisis Core was fun but felt so off the wall and strange. I hardly know what to make of it but I got to see Cissnei which I saw in the trailer for Rebirth so I feel like I know enough now to feel satisfied about starting it.

I mostly played it because of tie ins to the games as the remakes seem to pull in from the rest of the spin offs which is really nice but worrisome too.

How can you play it? Is the PS2 the only console it ever released on?

By having a playstation 2 o.o and the game of course. I mean...its a strange question to ask but yes, its only on the PS2 and I have the console, I just need to buy the game.

decent game, it's basically a final fantasy 7 themed third person shooter. I had fun with it, rented it a few times back in the day and probably beat it twice.

I'd say it's worth a playthrough if you haven't played it before.

I honestly really enjoyed it. I know it's not a popular opinion, but I liked it.

Why is it a strange question? I just wanted to double check that it never released on another console. Most FF games have been released on multiple consoles.

I think Dirge is mostly bashed for its story. The gameplay seems passable from what I can gather.

The gacha game currently does not have Dirge's story. The only ones they have are Crisis Core, First Soldier, and OG, and those are still ongoing IIRC.

Nah.

I am like, 99 percent sure that dirge will be getting the exact same kind of touch-up treatment that crisis core got and that it's gameplay will be vastly improved because of it. (Mainly because of dirge characters being a confirmed thing in the FF7 remake-verse so it just makes sense for it to get the same type of thing crisis core got). You are better off waiting on this eventual thing compared to boring yourself with the meh PS2 original.

That and vincent is still a very popular character so a version of his game not being shit (gameplay wise anyway, lol. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about the story/take it or leave it) has appeal.

I literally just saw a tweet comparing Dirge with Shadow the Hedgehog and saying they're the same game, lmao. I guess that should tell you what kind of game it is compared to the rest of the FFVII stuff.

And yeah, there's a chance they might remaster Dirge to drum up hype for playable Vincent in part 3.

It was the strange "how can you play it?" I don't know, maybe I overthought it.

I still think Shadow isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I think it did some things right.

Yeah to be fair I already saw its Wikipedia page and I didn't see any other consoles to play on. I just wanted to see if there were other consoles options.

Technically I have a PS2 but I don't know if it would work.

I actually didn't super hate it either. I really didn't like the tone and story but it was fun enough for me to keep replaying. The branching story was a cool concept but some of the missions were really aggravating, lol.

After all these years, I'm actually not sure what the general complaints about Dirge were? Late 2000s, it was just passed around as gospel that "DoC BAD!"

So, my personal take is the story is goofy in that charming mid-2000s way you could expect from Square with the general concept behind why everything is happening being wicked cool imo.

Gameplay wasn't particularly special, but I don't have much experience with shooters around the time to compare. There's also lots of optional extra missions with different gameplay styles.

It's a time capsule, I'd enjoy it as such~

Shadow the Hedgehog's problems were-

a) Terrible controls inherited from Sonic Heroes. Ignore what Yahtzee says, Sonic controls fine in 3D unless the controls themselves are bad. SA1 and SA2 control perfectly.
b) The story and out of touch tone. Shadow and Gerald's arcs ended in SA2, and why the fuck is he using guns?
c) The fact there's a canon ending that renders all the others irrelevant despite you being forced to do 10 full playthroughs when a level select would have done the trick and pretty much fixed the first half of this sentence (since you could get them over with quickly).
d) As said, the mission objectives themselves are insufferable. At least a map or radar would have helped.

And to clarify that point, I love Zero Punctuation but Yahtzee's take on 3D Sonic is mind-blowingly misguided. For all the problems 3D Sonic games have (including SA1 and SA2), "Sonic just doesn't work in 3D" is not one of them. That's a lazy cop out.

Yeah, I think some fan projects and other Sonic-likes have shown that 3D Sonic can absolutely work.

And I felt Sonic's controls in the Adventure games were the best they've ever been, the level design just needed to be better and less linear at times.
