This was literally a nothing burger, especially compared to the shit politicians say/do today

Ah, simpler times.

I remember it, but I didn't even know until recently that it was a speech he made in response to losing a caucus. That's probably what made it worse than it actually was.

It was silly and really easy to use against him by his opponents. It made him seem less serious, I think is the prevailing explanation.

In a well adjusted and intelligent society, it wouldn't have mattered.

The same people who clutched their pearls and acted like this was a big deal now worship at the altar of a man who openly bragged about sexual assault and is basically a living racist sound bite

I honestly don't think it was a big deal. Dean was hyped as the nominee apparent by the media and got a lot of attention, but when the votes started he immediately underperformed in a big way. As time progressed, he continued to fade behind a somehow primary powerhouse Kerry and even the douchebag Edwards.

The Dean scream made for an entertaining punch line and a seemingly simpler time for candidacies being unraveled by minor things, but the fact is that his campaign had already unraveled and the Dean scream was just the exclamation point at the end of his relevency as a supposed frontrunner. I honestly don't think it did him in, but rather coincided with the realization that his supposed lock wasn't remotely secure and he wasn't a frontrunner after all.

Erase the Dean scream, and my money is on the Dem ticket still being Kerry/Edwards.

There's an interesting comment explaining that this arena was extremely loud and people weren't able to hear him which is when he started yelling. The media coverage took away that context which made it appear he's a crazy guy just yelling for no reason.

Seems like he was set up. Like how everybody thinks the McDonalds spilled coffee was some bogus lawsuit, but actually it was unnaturally scalding hot coffee that badly burned the woman and she was right to sue them.
