I saw that on a McDonalds bag today and I was very, very confused.

They've basically got manga on the side of the bag where a bunch of really stereotypical anime characters are all praising how delicious WcDonalds is, and showing off the nuggets.

I feel like this is pandering to a niche audience that isn't remotely going to translate into actual increased sales. And is probably going to confuse a LOT of people. I get that the chain is panicking because they've been losing younger customers for years, but I'm not sure how well this campaign is going to work out for them.

I can imagine Japan actually hating it because they feel like it's making fun of them, or debasing their culture.

Though from what's been implied, I'm not even sure they're doing it as part of marketing in Japan. From what I'm reading it's mainly a Canada/US thing.

Now that McDonalds has done it themselves, does that mean anime can no longer feature WcDonalds without infringing on their trademark? It's now become an actual thing instead of just a parody.

I feel like that's more likely to backfire than yield any actual benefit for McD's. They won't be able to apply the trademark retroactively, so they won't be able to claim anything from prior uses of WcD's, and moving forward artists will just shift to a new parody instead of having to pay any sort of royalties to use WcD's. In turn, that's just going to piss off people who are annoyed that McD's has destroyed the venerated tradition of WcD's, who will then be even less likely to buy McD's (and they're probably the main niche this is trying to attract).

Tried it, got the sauce, it's not bad (kinda similar to the other niche sauce they had awhile back (Sweet and Spicy Jam and Mambo Sauce) but this taste a bit more 'Spicier and Hotter', more like actual Hot Sauce...

I have an idea for a better isekai promotion: crossover with another fast food restaurant chain that has a vastly different menu. For example, McDonald's X Tim Hortons. Somehow, Big Macs were transported to Tim Hortons and Tim Bits found their way to McDonald's. For a limited time, you can buy them in both chains. The only difference is that they're renamed Big Tims and Mac Bits where appropriate. Marketing makes it obvious that the two chains have partnered, but they pretend that they're hiding the error/crime with re-branding. In McDonald's version of the ad, they could show the Hamburglar stealing the Tim Bits. In Tim Hortons' version, they could show hockey players opening a box of Tim Bits only to see Big Macs inside. Confused, they realize there was a mix-up and that they have trucks full of them due to an error on the delivery slip. They decide to change the branding because "no one is going to notice it".
