Im plagued by a line from The Dark Knight, and Im plagued by it because I didnt write it, says Nolan. My brother [Jonathan] wrote it. It kills me, because its the line that most resonates. And at the time, I didnt even understand it. He says, You either die a hero or you live long enough to become the villain. I read it in his draft, and I was like, All right, Ill keep it in there, but I dont really know what it means. Is that really a thing? And then, over the years since that films come out, it just seems truer and truer. In this story, its absolutely that. Build them up, tear them down. Its the way we treat people.

In a way it is one of those lines that perhaps sounds deeper than it actually is. It is a bit weird for Dent to say during that dinner IIRC and more makes sense in a foreshadowing kind of way.

It sounds like something a 14-year-old would come up with when trying to sound edgy and deep.

I think it's one of those things that sounds a bit shallow at first. Like yeah Dent becomes a bad guy. Not all public figures become that. So at first read I can see it sounding a bit silly because it's not really a thing people would otherwise say.

But it also foreshadows Batman's fate. It's not just about people becoming literal villains. It's also about society making heroes into villains eventually.

Then you notice how it can apply to all sorts of situations and people. So it ended up resonating in a way much more than he expected when he initially read it.

Wasn't weird at all that Dent said it. He was using it as an allegory for Caesar.

I disagree. It sounds like a dumb tautology but there's actually an interesting insight to it.

Not in a especially deep or complicated way, but it's insightful toward the character, I mean.

This. Might have been a bit on the nose but it made enough sense, and, well..... it's a Batman movie.

Nope. That's why TDK was such a great movie. Had a bunch of original quotes that still reverberates today.

Im guessing he meant he didnt agree with it, that he used to see living to old age as a hero a common option.

It's a double meaning. Sometimes society can fail the hero as well.

Entertainment media needs way more of this kind of thing. I am beyond sick of people whining that the movie sucked because it wasn't boring enough and film studios bending over backwards for these fools.

If I ever direct a movie, the dialog is gonna straight-up RHYME. EVERYTHING is gonna be set to music. Freeze frames and dolly shots aplenty. And I am gonna make a twitter just so I can quote and mock those doofuses who whine that it's not immersive.

The other interpretation is that society views you as the villain. Hell it applies post-mortem in some cases as values change.

Is there much chance of that happening?

I get not liking the line, but why would it make you happy that he didnt write it?

Also, technically, Nolan did write it, as it was his brother with the same surname.
