netflix has fucked up so many times that i have no desire to give them anymore chances for a very long time. what they did to cowboy bebop should have landed them in prison.

still like them better than disney.

I watched the first 4 eps or so. It's decent. Special effects are mostly solid, costumes are legit good. Storytelling feels rushed despite spending long periods of time on filler? Kinda weird.

I'd give the first four episodes a 6 or 7/10, but i lost basically all interest after that and dropped it. I don't mind some of the changes they made, but the cartoon is so so much better. There just really isn't much point to it outside of introducing people who don't like animation to Avatar.

I'd agree with all of this.

But I'd also like to include Amazon and Apple TV in that list of shame, because of the corpse-raping they did to Wheel of Time, Rings of Power, and Foundation.

I'm not even sure why major studios bother adapting existing properties (especially from books) at all at this point, because they never seem to want to do anything that ever actually appeals to fans. While non-fans will never become fans because they don't care about the IP in the first place, and aren't likely to bother trying it when the only feedback they hear is fans shouting about how shit it all is.

The whole point of adapting something that's already popular is to keep all the aspects that made it popular in the first place but signal boost them to a new audience. But shit writers with unearned egos think they know better than the people who already succeeded, and try to force their own conflicting vision onto things until all they're left with is a stupid boring mess.

I'd be willing to accept it (even if I still resented them for it), if not for the fact that it's not even for a new generation of fans. It's for literally no one other than the people who made it. It's narcissistic masturbation.

When adaptations are being made by people who hate the original source material and/or refuse to even read it, how can they produce anything other than crap? If their original ideas were actually worthwhile, they wouldn't be working on adaptations, they'd be creating their own original properties and franchises.

I was eagerly looking forward to this ever since they announced it. I watched the first episode and had no desire to continue...

It was just so bad. From the cosplay outfits to the atrocious writing and to the never-ending exposition. Just add it to the list of live action adaptions that didn't need to be made.

Loved it.

I absolutely loved it. Better than the original in a lot of ways. Really hope they aren't discouraged by the 'fans' who only wanted an exact copy of the original. Would be a tragedy to not get seasons 2 and 3.

Regardless of what the series in question is or how much you're enjoying it, it's generally very risky to let yourself feel this way about anything Netflix produces.

Its decent but should stuck to the source material to be epic

I enjoyed it a lot. I like the animation more, but the Netflix adaptation was still really good to me Its not going to be to everyones liking, though I dont mind the changes. And I love the Iroh/Zuko parts a ton

Its very..meh.

The casting and effects are pretty good, and I like some of the additions like giving other avatars more screen time. Im even fine with only accessing their wisdom via their shrines. Hell, the best part of the show was Iroh and Zukos relationship, even if Iroh is a different take, its a pretty welcome one.

However, the writing is so piss poor that any small welcome addition almost doesnt matter. Some characters got toned down of any personality that made them such fun characters in the first place, some characters are just straight up ruined, most of the dialogue is just monologuing instead of actually showing anything, some important plot points are just made so much worse (Aang didnt run away this time, he just left to clear his head, it just happened to be at the wrong time) and the pacing is just all over the place (the Southern Air Temple episode is reduced to the epilogue and its buildup was ruined by the prologue).

6/10 and that might be generous. I gave up after episode 4 and just went back to the cartoon. I couldnt care less if this gets a second season.

I feel bad for all the people that hyped it up soooo hard and then like a month from release Netflix tripped over their own dick every time they said more about the series and then it finally came out and it seems like nobody gives a shit and its just barely passable. It really does feel like nobody is talking about this series outside of exactly the context of this thread.

Honestly, the ultimate reaction seems to be about what I expected, which is roughly what the better live action Disney movie remakes got: "It's okay, but there isn't much reason to watch this over the original." That's kind of inevitable with remakes like this: Either you do a frame-for-frame remake and end up with something totally redundant (if not strictly worse, as happened with the Lion King), or you try to make changes to take advantage of the different medium and end up losing some of the nostalgic appeal you were banking on to gamble on something new that may or may not actually improve anything.

If it's something where a big part of the appeal is the spectacle, then live-action remakes can add something meaningful with a different aesthetic without taking anything away from the rest of it (my impression is that the live action One Piece did pretty well, and shounen often puts a lot of emphasis on the spectacle of fight scenes, so that makes sense), but for something like Avatar that's mostly a character story, live-action doesn't inherently change much. The world-building does, however, lend itself to quite a bit of hype from preview material in that it's interesting to see the live-action takes on the setting, which I think is where a lot of the hype came from.

Solid 8 from me

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would

The animated series is tough to beat so of course a live action show isn't going to top it, but I thought they did a good job, can't wait for the rest
