The USA is experiencing one of the largest annual decreases in murders, possibly the largest, according to recently published data from the FBI and statistics collected by independent criminologists and researchers, the NY Times reports.

This decrease is not limited to murder. Of the nine categories of violent and property crimes that the FBI keeps statistics on, only motor vehicle theft has increased.

Progress in major cities

In cities often singled out by politicians as dangerous and violent, including Chicago and New York, crime is decreasing nationwide. In Chicago, murders are down by 13 percent and in New York by 11 percent, where shootings are down by 25 percent. Detroit is on track to record the lowest number of murders since 1966.

Even though some cities like Washington are experiencing the opposite trend, the progress in cities like Detroit, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles shows that a combination of targeted efforts and the general return to normalcy after the pandemic can have a significant impact on reducing crime.

This is because the GOP tries to amplifies perception of crime rates so they can pretend to be the law and order party.

Not so much at the ground level though, its more about at the legislative level. If things go south in that sense, then the streets will become unsafe.
