in the last couple fast food topics, i've seen a (relatively small) number of people get upset that they have to use the app to get the exclusive deals

but like why would you not want to use it?
you like shouting your order over a loud speaker to someone who has a good chance of mishearing, misunderstanding, or entering your order wrong?
you like not knowing a clear price of upcharges, add-ons and substitutions? how long til your order is ready? having to pay at the window? or fuck, asking everyone else in the car what they want and trying to relay it?

apps are sweet and so are the deals
love being able to take off what i want, add what i want, know what each addition costs (if at all)
always get extra pickle, extra sauce (whatever it may be), no tomato on my burgers
and hell at taco bell you can even recreate long gone menu items
i take the beefy 5 layer, get double beef, swap the beans for potatoes and the shredded cheese for nacho cheese to make the 1/2lb cheesy potato burrito they used to have

just dont get the pushback tbh

probably app overload. every business is trying to push an app on us and who honestly wants to install that many different things on their phone. it's exhausting

searching "mcdonalds" in the google/apple store and pressing "install" is less exhausting than having to talk to a drive thru worker imo

Apps only exist to override data access protections on the browser.

It is kinda ass having to have a separate app for every single place just to get deals. I already have to use a bunch of different installers for music software and game libraries, I don't wanna clog up my phone just to clog up my arteries

People talk about insane prices, but using Grubhub + or similar the prices are actually quite reasonable.

You can save a lot by getting the food yourself too

I only have the Taco Bell app on my phone.

Back when the McDonald's app came out it demanded access to my location and I promptly un-installed it

Usually I thought they're talking about delivery apps like Doordash, Grubhub, Postmates I thought?

I don't go through drive-thrus anywhere near often enough to justify installing an app that's going to constantly scream "Buy McDonald's buy McDonald's buy McDonald's" at me via push notifications.

I dont know if this is an Android thing but on iOS disabling push notifications is literally an automatic process when you first open the app.

For some apps (Uber and any sort of delivery app) it makes sense to have them on

I will take an order from an app over an order over the phone about 85% of the time.

You have no idea how many people struggle to make an order on the phone.
A huge amount of people are either old, and forgot how phones work, and another chunk are young and stoned out of their minds. And then you have people with screaming kids in the background. And those that don't know what they want yet....and again...those that want to tweak out and order almost beyond recognition.

That is exhausting.

I don't get apps for drive thru establishments honestly. In those situations...I'd rather just do it offline. This is a cash for food exercise, that's it. I'll order at the drive thru like all the other normies and be done with it by paying in person with my order linked to that verbal exchange that just happened.

Apps for fast casual dining where you're going to pick up the order? It's essentially just a question of personalized app vs online website. And usually the app will have a superior ecosystem over the raw website.

My issue is the app does nothing that a traditional menu and website can't do, but is specifically designed to collect as much data about you as possible. Eating habits, locations, etc. I remember when Tim Hortons had to settle a class action lawsuit because their app actually tracked where you were without your consent and phoned home whenever you were in a competitor's parking lot. Now you're telling me I can't even use apps without location services turned on. McDonald's what? Piss off.

If you too are wondering the answer to the ultimate question does McDonald's serve salads in 2024? the shortest answer is NO. Unfortunately, now you won't be able to order salads from McDonald's in the US but many other locations outside the States like the UK still do serve them.
