No, but if they were employed it's only fair for them to be helping out with expenses like groceries and the utilities.

My kid doesn't live with me but if she did I would expect her to contribute at least some towards the rent and bills since she's an adult with a job.

The amount I'd charge would be very reasonable though, but you gotta contribute if you're capable of doing so.

After a certain point, sure. It doesn't matter if they're my kids or not, it's just a rule to contribute if you can. When I stay with a girlfriend's family, I do their landscaping and general physical labor and contribute to groceries, or whatever they need.

If they were financially able to, then sure. But not if it would cause an undue burden on them when I could handle the expenses for both of us on my own, that doesn't help anybody.

No.

It's their home. Home is always there when they need it. No fees, no conditions. That's what my parents did for me, and that's what I would do.

Besides, how are they ever going to afford their own place if you're charging them rent?

(I do know of some parents who charged rent, but put it into a savings account so their kids could use it as deposit on a house. Seems a good alternative).

Maybe not solely monetary payment, but assuming this scenario is your kid living in the house as an adult after college or something, i dont think its unreasonable to have them contribute in some way.

Whether this is by paying rent, doing chores, etc.

It would really depend on the circumstances.

Contributing toward the house's upkeep is perfectly reasonable.

Predatory landlord profit-driven rent is not.

No. I think charging them rent would be counter productive. How do you save up to move out, when you have to pay to live there? That's was my mom's philosophy.

You take their "rent" money and put it into a savings account in secret. Then after 5 or so years, bust it out as a surprise for a downpayment on a house.

No kids, but if I were in that situation I would probably expect them to be in school or working. If they have an income, they will pay a nominal rent, which I would set aside in a savings account to gift them for a security deposit and moving expenses when they get back on their feet and move into an apartment.
