I'm about to finish Chained Echoes and am thinking I am going to play Disco Elysium next (it's either that or 13 Sentinels).

It looks complex as hell but I've heard that it isn't so bad and it's impossible to get stuck. is that true?

Any tips or things I should know before I start?

I don't think you can get stuck, no. Failing a check just means a different (often more entertaining) outcome, not that you can't proceed.

I played it a few months ago and it was a great experience. It might seem a bit overwhelming at first but at least for me you quickly get a hang of things and it really isn't that bad.

I think there is exactly one way to kinda get stuck, but I think it just gives you like a bad/joke end. You'd have to go out of your way to pull it off, I think, but technically I think you can end up without enough money to get a room for the night on Day 2.

Autosave does not activate very often, so I recommend saving often, just in case you game over.

Quick Travel exists, but it takes a while to get it. When you do get it, you have to be standing in one of the Quick Travel spots to activate it and you activate it on the map.

If you fail a white check, you can try again if you level up the associated stat. You can also try again under special circumstances, usually something that would give you a bonus to rolling (like learning something new).

Best advice for DE is to embrace the absurdity. You might have played some games that have silly dialogue options or choices that mostly serve as jokes that aren't really meant to be picked seriously because they'll not matter or worse case lead to a bad outcome. Disco Elysium is not one of those games. If there's a goofy option you want to pick, do it.

Just make sure you're not running around with 1 hp in either of your health stats

  1. Save often
  2. Embrace the absurdity
Seems about right.

Keep a skillpoint in the pocket for retrying white checks just in case and save often. That's about all you need.

This. It took a little while for this game to click for me, as i kept dying and getting game over to the dumbest shit in the beginning. Just dont get frustrated and stick with it because boy is it worth the ride

also do every side quest. Even if something seems pointless and boring, theres big payoffs

Enjoy the game. It's full of a lot of lore. You don't need to dig into all of it. Some of it may go over your head a bit. But it's very fascinating and thought provoking stuff. Lots of levity breaks in there too. Just absurd and funny stuff.

If you want, you can save before certain big conversations so that if you don't get a good dice roll, you can reload the save and re-roll.

I should also note, there are some really cool and long sidequests that are sometimes very difficult to unlock.

Also, and this is a bit random, but this game features maybe the most foul mouthed kid in all of video games, who in the end became one of my favorite characters.
