Or do you think we become the functional equivalent of a virus and just spread ourselves to the point of self-destruction?

Nah, we are definitely more likely to being the end of our species than natural causes. We're already in the process of it with regards to global warming.

I think the fact that it's a toss up if a game show conman with 91 criminal indictments who tried to overthrow the government because he lost may or may not become President in a few months is enough to show that no, we are not smart enough and we most likely deserve it.

I honestly don't think religion is the worst problem. I think that this human drive to compete and conquer is what might end us. I view humankind as a game of prisoners' dilemma. Would we rather sacrifice personal desire and triumph for mutual benefit, or betray each other and kill ourselves for the sake of personal glory?

Nope. Anyone believes humans will reach Star Trek levels of tech is fucking delusional. Bladerunner and Cyberpunk in general is and always has been the most realistic take on humanity's future. WH40k's "grim dark" also is very accurate in spirit not in technology.

What about tech from the Aliens franchise? Able to transport to other star systems but using cryo sleep. Like people get frozen and wake up at a new planet 50 years later

The idea of space colonization when a sizable fraction of humanity (i.e. MAGAts) are wannabe Dr. Smiths (or worse) from the old Lost in Space show is absurd.

i think assuming we have our destiny in our own hands is probably a bit conceited. global catastrophe in the form of giant fucking space rock is a way we could easily go and not really have much of any say. some disease that really really likes us could form, too.

No, we don't have the self control to prevent our own extinction.

We don't have enough self control to take $1 so we can make $10 tomorrow. Instead our greed demands we take the constant $5 because we're blinded by greed.

Greed has consumed us to the point of causing systemic uncontrollable issues and we're going to cause everything we've strive so hard to make worth something, to be worth nothing.

Everything connected to the growth of civilization actively makes the planet worse for us and everything else. Instead of changing our behavior we are just doing it more, with more people all the time, with energy needs per person increasing. We are removing rules and regulations because they hamper economic growth. Racism and bigotry is increasing even in the civilized west. Pillarization was replaced by tribalism which is arguably worse. Now the EU was even told to prepare for war, Tusk said the time of peace is over. I think were fucked.

It doesn't need to be smart or self-controlled enough as a whole. Mankind doesn't go extinct unless we can no longer reproduce, and it only takes a few people escaping to keep the species going.

Civilisation on a global scale, sure. But as said below-

-the species wont die out entirely. Climate change will cause the deaths of billions, but that will also decrease carbon emissions, so eventually well hit equilibrium. Thats what nature does.

As a Cracked.com writer once put it, weve been on the brink of extinction before and bounced back because were very good at fucking.

Thats no consolation to those of us alive and in (relative) luxury right now, though.

I think when people say end of humanity they dont always mean the literal end of the species but an end to the way of life we have had for hundreds of thousands of years, especially when we fuck up the planet in ways that make survival hard.

I mean if our best and brightest were in charge and were listened to, I'd say sure, no problem. But for every best and brightest there's 20 or 30 or 40 greedy, stupid shitheads that somehow ended up in the position to be making decisions of any import. People that would gladly put their own comfort, not even survival, over hundreds of thousands of lives.

So no, we're quite fucked.

Yes. But there's going to be extended patches that cut it pretty close given the current management and I cannot imagine what the world will look like after those patches

It'd take like a surprise nuclear exchange or cosmological catastrophe to -actually- drive the number down below that point.

That said, would anyone truly want to live in a post-societal world? That's a different question I think
