Elheim beated. The whole area was a disappointing step down from Drakenhold, both for the story and the characters. It was actually pretty cool how many characters got to shine in Drakenhold, in the main story and also side quests. But Elheim was more like a typical Fire Emblem game where the extra characters almost entirely disappeared after you recruit them.

Hopefully Bastorias is better.

Keep it going! 13 Sentinels took over a year to reach 300k (though notably only initially launched on PlayStation, seems to have reached a bit over 1 million by now).

Of course this game also released being smashed up against some of the biggest games of the entire year, so all the more impressive!

So I'm goin through Bastorias - is there any value in using these bestrals? They kinda just seem like copies of existing units with this night time buff - I don't think I care about that, and I'm more interested in refining my current units than trying to figure out what to do with these guys. They don't differentiate enough like the laguz did.

Elves were a welcome addition because I was struggling to get past guards and the elves dipping all their attacks in Mama Liz's magic potency was a welcome addition. Though they are falling off now with Snow Ranger just seeming like a better Elven Archer.

Snow Ranger is busted good.

Owls are probably the most meta unit in the game ATM, they're niche at healing but are otherwise kind of amazing.

Lions are just slightly different Gladiators, pretty interchangeable.

Foxes are dodge tanks like theives, but having lances open up a lot of column debuffing options.

Bears are....weird. They're actually like Dark Knight Warriors? They're not doing shit until the latter chunks of the fight, and the accuracy sucks, but they can really explode with damage. Have that extremely powerful parting blow can actually be really clutch.

Werewolves are the ones I have the least grasp on. Followup up chipping? Seems like they need the right partners.

How many squads did people actively use when playing this? I had five main ones, and eventually built a sixth just to have a lower level group for fighting in Drakenhold when I went there overleveled, but never used it after that. Five seemed like an appropriate amount to have.

Yeah, I usually had my two "main squads" that were unbeatable and 3-5 support squads. The way you have to update squads from 3 to 4 characters then eventually 4-5 one squad at a time by default means that some of your squads are just better than the others for significant portion of the game.

So I pretty much had my Alain and Berengaria squads as hard carries that could solve basically any issue, but it felt cheesy to use them all the time and hog all the exp so I'd try and go out of my way to use my other squads more. Virginia's squad, Ochlys's flying squad, the cavalry squad, Yunifi's all archers squad, Bruno's failure squad, and Travis's dodge squad. I always had a couple unfilled squads. By Albion I had 2 great squads and 6 okay squads.

Now that I'm about to head into the final battles in the middle of Cornia I went ahead and built out my last two squads for funsies, but it's only because farming money and exp was super easy with the last sigil. Gave Scarlett her own squad with two wizards to do big magic damage, and I'm trying out a Gloucester unit. So I'm finally up to 10 units but its absolutely overkill on Expert

I kept a full 10 unit squad evenly leveled. It was fun being able to use everyone evenly, and all 10 of the units were competent (I was playing on Tactical).

And then I ran out of room to put new characters and my motivation to continue playing kinda dived off a cliff. <_<

It's fine if they want to limit the number of units, but they could've at least let you save entire formations so you could quickly swap whole teams in and out.

I don't know if I can handle another run. As the game has progressed, and the number of characters per unit increased, the number of skills everyone has, and the amount of AP/PP everyone has, the amount of time I spend staring at a full unit wipe trying to big brain the perfect tactics swap to turn this around is crazy

I wish some of this complexity was moved out of the unit formations and into the map movement - that part is so bare bones in comparison.

which is to say, there are so few map skills I look for beyond Plunder and I wish I was spending more of my VP on it

i use that, hastened call, heavy swing (battles are easy but barricades suck), fortress, vitalize, heal, life aid, teleport, jump, rescue, yunifis assist thing, alains, virginias

it takes way too long to find the right one so I end up with just 10 VP sitting by the end some times (on tactical)

so I just go looking for ways to spend it that I probably dont need to

and I always want Plunder because its like a meta-power, and there arent that many ways to cash in VP for later

unfortunately it requires enemies to be alive, so I all the time hit 10 VP like right before I get to the boss, and Im like oh now I better spend it

but everyone I need to plunder from is dead

I should also really be using the eggs more

Did people actually use mercs in battle? I only ever hired them to station as guards. Mostly in the midgame, where I started having more towns than characters to station in them.

I didn't use the mercs in my first playthrough at all besides a single Radiant Knight. Just too good a class.

Going to be using mostly mercs in my second playthrough, though.

It definitely does not feel like you are meant to have all the towns guarded at once during the normal playthrough.

Just got through the first non-tutorial battle. Wow that was tough! I'm playing on Tactical difficulty. Clive pretty much clutched it out for me. I like the abilities. Still getting the hang of things though.
