A 21-year-old university student has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, for stealing six mikan (mandarins) from a home partially damaged by the Jan 1 earthquake in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture.

The Kanazawa District Court on Wednesday handed down the sentence against Fumiaki Matsuoka, from Kariya City, Aichi Prefecture, Kyodo News reported. He was convicted of breaking into the house and stealing a box containing six high-quality mikan (mandarins) worth 3,000 yen from the kitchen, at around 8:40 a.m. on Jan 5.

The house belongs to a man in his 70s who had been evacuated after the quake. However, Matsuoka was detained by a neighbor who was suspicious at seeing a stranger come out of the house.

After his arrest, Matsuoka told police he came to the area as a volunteer worker, the court heard.

Fair. Nothing to do with stealing oranges. He took advantage of a natural disaster to break into an unoccupied home.

Japan's laws seem weird to me, a citizen of the USA.
Like, if the time was for breaking and entering or looting, I could see that.
But just for the theft of the oranges themselves? That should be much lighter sentencing.

Also, Japan gave a guy with cp a slap on the wrist fine of what's equivalent to $1,500 USD.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

The guy who did Toriko got off pretty light too. Act-Age guy I think got hit harder, but he also was just grabbing the butts of random school girls, which would sensibly be worse than possession.
Then again, it was only recently the definition of rape was changed so that it wasn't reliant on physical violence in Japan.

From stories I've heard, I get the sense that aside punishments that come from businesses going to court against someone are worse than regular criminal charges except for heinous crimes like murder.

wut

it's far more than one incident and US injustice is brought up all the time. Donald Trump being above the law (and literally trying to argue in writing that he is not bound by laws) is a daily subject

That aside, why in the holy mother of fuck are you whataboutisming child predators?

The owner was evacuated. He probably wasn't coming back anytime soon, and the oranges would have rotted in the house, if they weren't stolen and eaten

I don't think it's even been confirmed that they were eaten
