I honestly don't understand why it's referred to as such. Just call it a black dress, if it looks good it looks good, no need for such a weird designation.

Because it's meant to show off some skin while still looking somewhat classy-- but they're 'little' compared to big, elaborate ball gowns & shit.

Nobody in modern times would wear those kind of dresses for the average sort of dancing or dancing events. Ranging from homecoming, to prom, to the club, modern female black dress are "little black dress" by default, if they want to go ballroom dancing maybe they'd get something over the top in coverage/material, however that's more of an exception than a black dress that shows skin and is meant to catch attention.

You're getting caught up on a particular word he used, instead of the idea. The "little" comes from it having less fabric than other dress types. That's it, that's all.

It's just a phrase used for a popular item of clothing. 'Every woman needs a little black dress' etc.

They're very versatile. You can dress them up or down.
