"How do you know when you've made it?"

I've used that logic at times when I was uncomfortable in a social situation and had to push through it for work or to make a good impression, etc.

Some people are very sensitive to the outward projection of confidence, or lack of. If they think you appear to lack confidence then they instantly and permanently lose confidence in you. Because of that I would fake confidence to appease those surface level thinkers until I became truly confident in my abilities

No. True confidence comes from overcoming difficult things. If you fake confidence you will be exposed as a fraud as soon as you are forced to back it up.

Depends.

I wouldn't recommend it as a way to start your career in brain surgery. But for a lot of things it works as long as you don't forget that you are eventually supposed to 'make it'.

Depends. Overcoming social anxiety is often a difficult thing. There's many people who actually have the chops to back "it" up but don't assert themselves.

It shouldn't be 'fake it to you make it' but 'act real until you remember'.

It definitely did for me. I used to be a very awkward introvert, but I always wanted to become sociable and be able to go out and just interact with people and getting along with them.
So I tried things out in terms of social behaviour, and while initially not everything may have been sincere, it did help me discover what does and doesn't feel good, and I've made the behaviour that does feel good my own, until it gradually felt more natural to do throughout the years to the point where I honestly feel that the way I socially express myself does feel sincere.

The "fake it" part, I feel, shouldn't be to "lie" but rather just stretch the truth to a certain capacity where it's believable.
