This is definitely like, not how youre supposed to use Excel I dont know that theres a way to do this quickly (and have the correct name on each tab) because why would Excel give you the tools to do something so inefficient

You can technically have over a million tabs in Excel. Will it run well for him is another question

Is this the kind of person you can calmly, and rationally explain this to?

Have your proposed alternative ready to show them if you confront them over this.

Why the fuck would they want that?

Do you have to do a daily bank reconciliation or something?

How complex is his daily spreadsheet that he wouldn't benefit from making it at least weekly? Or break his spreadsheet(s) down into Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly files with Daily or Weekly tabs?

Or perhaps he's trying to make it inefficient so Excel takes an hour to load his spreadsheet and he can go dick off somewhere?

This is a mockup of what the top of one of his tabs looks like. It continues down about 70 rows for ten Areas.

My first instinct is to make each tab a row on one spreadsheet with the ID being the date. But, that would come out to a great many columns since each Sub-Area would need a column, twice, to account for Type 1 and Type 2.

Couldn't you just have a column that would say either Type 1 or Type 2 and just increase the number of rows rather than the number of columns?

What is his overall goal for this? Is it just to count the total number for each one?

NGL my plan is to deliver this guy exactly what he wants and if it runs like shit notify him why wed expect it to fundamentally and let that be a push to change his mind. If he ends up liking it instead, not my problem anymore tbh

Row1 : Jan 1st / Type A
Row2 : Jan 1st / Type B
Row3 : Jan 2nd / Type A
Row4 : Jan 2nd / Type B

Don't do this in excel. Write a Python script to create and populate the workbook for you. It's the only sane way.

Depending on what he needs it for there is def a more efficient way do what he wants.
