My gf dragged me to see it in the theater when she was going through her artsy phase. She kind of hated it, but I loved it.

That sort of happened with most of the artsy pretentious movies she wanted to see - she'd always sort of wind up hating them and apologize for making me watch them, but I usually enjoyed them. Lost in Translation was the other major one I remember from that time.

Ironically, when it was my turn to pick a movie I'd always pick something like Blade or Resident Evil or Atlantis: The Lost Empire and she wound up loving all of them.

Loved that movie. House of Flying Daggers was also great.

It definitely is easy to believe it's just another wire-fu movie, but the neat twists and turns of the story, and itself being a fictious version of real historical characters and events was cool.

According to Wikipedia, it is the 5th highest non-English film in North America. It was #4, but Godzilla Minus One surpassed it. Pretty damn impressive. Also, the film would likely never have come to NA if not for Quentin Tarantino getting involved in pushing it through.

Personally I was really into the color symbolism. And how so much of the visual storytelling really worked perfectly.

Talking about other "wire-fu" movies, I definitely enjoyed it more than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers, which where the other two movies along those lines that came out around the same time.

But I've got them all (and a few others) in my DVD collection - I've got a foreign film section in general, but the Asian martial arts film section is about a dozen or so deep alone.

Same.

I'd say Hero>CTHD>HotFD for what it's worth. I'm like the only one that felt a little underwhelmed by Daggers, it seems. Then again, I also haven't seen it since it came out, despite owning it, so it may be time to take a view again.

You're not the only one, I'd say pretty much the exact same.

Also, for me I rate this one between Hero and CTHD:

...but I also acknowledge that might be a personal bias rather than it being a better movie overall. I'm not sure anyone else would rate it as highly as I do (or maybe they would, I don't know).
