His 2001 film Spirited Away became the highest-grossing film in Japanese history,[b] winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and is frequently ranked among the greatest films of the 21st century. Miyazaki's later filmsHowl's Moving Castle (2004), Ponyo (2008), and The Wind Rises (2013)also enjoyed critical and commercial success. Following the release of The Wind Rises, Miyazaki announced his retirement from feature films, though he later returned to write and direct his twelfth feature film The Boy and the Heron (2023), for which he won his second Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

I am aware of Hayao Miyazaki's works like, Princess Mononoke, but I didn't know him by name either.

Either way, I voted Akira Toriyama. I mean, Dragon Ball is just a huge IP.

Expecting people to know the creator of every supposed famous work is a terrible take. Had to look his name up as well.

Also, I didn't know Spirited Away was considered that important. Didn't find it particularly good. Enjoyed several of his other works more.

Miyazaki is a great artist and animator. His storytelling is either genius or really weird and undercooked.

Toriyama is basically the reason Japan became big in the west (along with Pokemon) and shaped an entire genre. His storytelling was also really fun and kind of innovative for the time, or. You know.

Both are pretty much at the top of their class.

No I'm not. C'mon Scotty. You don't need to embarrass yourself. I mean maybe you have a humiliation fetish.

My argument is that Toriyama's work is more accessible because televisions are more widely used, and in households compared to people going to the movies. Which in turn makes him more iconic because his work is more likely to be seen.

And this isn't even taking into account his video game work, or even his own manga.

A television show isn't more iconic than a movie just because it's "more likely to be seen", no.

Scotty. What did you ask? "Whose work is more iconic"

You named two of the biggest names in the Japanese industry.

All things being equal, the more iconic work is the one seen by more. So the one that is going to garner more veneration-the definition of being an icon-is the one being seen by more people.

I don't even know why I'm arguing this with you.

The tl;dr is Disney had been wanting to quit the animation business for a while after great mouse detective flopped. They were considering an exit for good but two things changed their mind. Studio Ghibli entering the scene was one of them. The other was An American Tail.

That inspired them to give it one more go and that movie was Little Mermaid.
