Honestly, there's not a lot of RPGs on the NES, it feels weird to say something like the worst RPG on the NES is Dragon Quest 2 just because it's the weakest of a lineup of total bangers... but I think I might say Swords and Serpents is the worst, or perhaps Heroes of the Lance if you count it as an RPG. If including unlicensed games then Super Black Onyx for sure for not only being convoluted and stupid, but also being stupid.

For the SNES: Worst by far goes to Obitus (same publisher as Super Black Onyx, btw, weird)... although I've heard cases for Lufia 1 or TECMO: Secret of the Stars (Tecmo is toooootaly part of the title)

Genesis? I guess Shining in the Darkness by default due to lack of options... but I'd be willing to hear alternatives since I'm not well verses in Genesis and Master System stuff (or TG16)

Worst? I dunno didn't play ALOT of RPGs on those systems...but I didn't really understand the early RPGs (FF, DQ, etc) on the NES for the life of me when I was a kid.

I don't really have an interesting answer. technically something like Dragon Quest 1 and Phantasy Star ? for NES and Genesis. for SNES I guess it must be Inindo: Way of the Ninja.

Genesis barely had any RPGs to judge.

For the SNES, I'm going to say Chrono Trigger just to piss people off.

For the NES I'm going to say Mother just to piss the hipsters off.

of the tiny list of NES RPGs I've ever played it left the weakest impression. (basically loses only to FF1.) if I played these games again today I'd have a different opinion.

NES: I know a lot of people have a soft spot for it, but Legacy of the Wizard is a confusing, unfairly hard, mess. I get it is probably one of the first open world "metroidvania" RPGs, but it just does not work. They are trying to do way to much with the limited NES abilities. Runner up goes to Faxanadu, which is apparently from the same series.

SNES: Probably Drakkhen. I see a lot of people say 7th Saga as well, but I didn't think it was that bad. At the very least it is pretty innovative.

Genesis: Either Super Hydlide or Sword of Vermilion. I'll give it to Sword of Vermilion just because it is rather boring instead of "So bad it is good" like Super Hydlide.

I actually remember liking the game a lot as a kid. Even to the point where I had rented both FF1 and DQ1, and was actually disappointed when my parents got me FF1 for Christmas.

not sure if it's coming across but what I'm trying to say is that I've played so few of them on those platforms (NES and Genesis) that my answer is only a technicality based on far less than adequate experience. all I really remember about DQ1 is fighting slimes and having to use the menu to climb stairs. (though I think it and Zelda 2 are the reason why the first enemy I usually put in my past attempts at making RPG games is a slime.)

The 7th Saga US version was pretty notorious for how horrifically balanced it was. I think it deserves a spot up there based solely on how much it was tweaked to hate you, despite the JP version being relatively liked

Lagoon (SNES) has been my least-favorite. Or at least gave me the worst impression - I gave up in the first dungeon because of the terrible combat.

Not sure about NES/Genesis, but for SNES? Lord of the Rings Vol. 1

LotR Vol 1 has some killer songs, some of the best on the SNES, but it is... not good. Multiplayer makes it more tolerable but it is still not good.

There was a Japan-only Tenchi Muyo SRPG for the Super Famicom I played ~25 years ago that was pretty bad. That one's probably the worst I've played.

aw, I liked it as a kid and beat it once. the worst part (IIRC) is the maps that have repeating sections, but you either get used to it after a while and/or I can't remember if writing your own map as you go helped too.

I do remember the music being good.

I also remember you can cheese-kill the ringwraiths which was funny.

I dunno I thought that game was more Action Adventure moreso than RPG...not sure tho only played it once as a Rental as a kid, but I thought it was more like the Castlevaina games.

Genesis: Either Super Hydlide or Sword of Vermilion. I'll give it to Sword of Vermilion just because it is rather boring instead of "So bad it is good" like Super Hydlide.

Never got around to playing Super Hydlide (remember seeing it on that Game Poster you got when you brought a System, ;-) but I dunno, I though SoV was ok for what it was. I was kinda like Zelda II, it had both Top Down and Side Scrolling (mainly the Boss Battles) views, so it was kinda unique in that aspect. But I could see why many didn't like it.

I guess Shining in the Darkness by default due to lack of options

SitD was for all intent and purposes was similar to the 1st Phantasy Star game...a FP mainly Dungeon crawler that many people didn't really understand or comprehend (since the Genesis was really Sega's way to market their strong Arcade titles at home at the time). Of course when I first played it I was completely lost just like in PS, but after years past by and gotten a few RPGs under my belt, it actually turned out to be a decent game (with the sorta surprise twist at the end).
