Catch and release is apparently a fishing style where you catch a fish and release it. The fish will still have a hole in its mouth, and will have psychological damage due to being whipped into the heavens when trying to eat a worm, being man handled, and thrown back. Can the fish ever acclimate back to its normal life with this physical and mental damage?

I feel like psychological trauma doesn't happen to something that forgets in 5 seconds

Most of them develop drinking problems.

Ive caught multiple fish that had old scars from being caught mainly large sports fish like largemouth or striped bass

You typically let the bigger ones go to hopefully get bigger late even when fishing to eat. If you want to mount it these days all you need to do is measure and take a picture to get it recreated

As for hurting them well I guess its not enough to keep them from hitting again

I only release the fish if I have to. Strictly catch and release fishing is just cruel.

Interesting that they heal from a hole in their mouth.

They sometimes dont but it doesnt bother them. They just live their lives oblivious they almost became dinner

On a side note no fisherman can avoid killing or hurting fish. Youll eventually hook one in the gills which is usually a death sentence

Settin' in a boat with a bucket of beer
Hadn't caught nuthin' but didn't much care
I guess I was pretty well satisfied
Had my little lady right by my side
Takin' it easy, yeah still waitin'
Worm been gone off-a that hook for a couple of hours

You go fishin', tell y' what to do
Go set down by the grassy dew
Take a piece of string, tie it on yo' pole
And throw it way out in th' middle of th' hole
Find you a good shady tree and then just set down
Go to sleep...forget all about it

It's not kinder but at least there's a purpose behind killing them for food rather just injuring them for sport.

It's a fish. Plants probably feel more traumatized by things now that we know they can communicate with other plants.

yeah, it can. if you're using a barbed hook, that can really easily tear the mouth or gills when you remove it. maybe one small tear won't really hurt the fish, but if its caught enough times..
then there's the general dangers like a hook can catch its eye, if it catches too far down the mouth it can snag organs, and stuff like that.
i think its stupid but people still do it. its basically a sport at that point, just catch to eat and leave it at that.

Sometimes you have to throw them back and I get that. But doing it for pure sport is a bit much.

I catch and release. Most fishermen I know do that too. However I am from a poorer area and some of the things they do around here are borderline torture (depending on how advanced you think fish are). Some people catch bluegill and just keep them in a plastic bag with barely any water until they take them home.

Why does being poor matter?
