But after the defeat of the demon lord, everyone that Kaito thought was an ally and a friend betrayed him and used him as a scapegoat to cover their transgressions. After he was hunted down and eventually killed, Kaito swore on his dying breath that they will all taste his wrath. As luck would have it, a being who called herself The Earth Goddess heard his vow and offered him the opportunity to go through with it and was sent back to the start of his journey. This time, he has his memories of his past life. Shield Hero is similar and mid-SAO era, and it's also pretty bad in hindsight. Mushoku Tensei is actually good and was early-SAO. I don't think it predates SAO, but they started around the same time, and MT was actually already big in Japan, which is why it got such a high quality anime adaptation. Basically what I mean to say it, SAO is to blame some way or another.
