Nurses only work 36 hours on average? I tend to think of nurses as the backbone of the medical field.

I only work 36 on average. Sometimes more sometimes less. I scribe, so not a nurse, but I follow a doctor around

There was a push for 32 hours back in the day, iirc. 40 hours won out, though.

Theres no way my job would work at half the hours.

Im sure there are many that can, though if youre literally there twice as long as you need to be, it does make me question why you dont have a bigger workload.

Many jobs just work that way, you cant make more work than there is but you still gotta do the 9-5 because its expected. Then you have the extreme version like the Korean workhours where youre just there because the boss is there.

And that 40 was a compromise as well iirc. Things have been sliding back towards longer hours lately too. Not unusual to have companies do crunch for 60+ hours a week.

Yes, a lot of these impossible obstacles are simply people being unable to imagine our workplace culture could be different and better. Sometimes it's something so simple and fundamental like hiring more or fewer people.

Finding out about that was one of the moments I felt most validated in my entire life. It's fucking omnipresent once you know to look for it.

Capitalists at the turn of the century made people work way more than 40 hours.
40 became a compromise after many bloody strikes where cops murdered striking workers.
This is reductionist but the gist of it.

Supermarkets and warehouses. That's really only because the companies that own them refuse to hire enough employees.

.that was just normal at my last job. There was awhile we where working 7 12s in a row only to get 1 day off and do it all over again.

Here it's 16 hours as the max they can work you. I have worked several 15 hour shifts. And a lot if jobs aren't required to be given breaks. The one I'm talking about we didn't get breaks. I remember one night we where so busy I ended up having to eat my food while walking from place to place

Oddly I remember fast food being singled out from other low end jobs that wherent required to get a break. Like retail gets a break but not fast food?

It is really sad that you do not know how many ordinary people lost their lives or were jailed or were deported before the work week was reduced to 40.

It is just as sad that American standard of living is going down instead of going up.

As was pointed out already, in the early 1800's (the industrial revolution) the typical work week was 80-100 hours in a factory. It took decades of pushing for better working conditions before laws starting passing to reduce the work week hours. And even then, only a few states passed laws. The 40 hour work week didn't become federal law until after Henry Ford started pushing for it.

We can definitely push for better working conditions again. The idea is that we work less hours, but get the same pay, or higher. Because there's a lot of jobs that don't really require 8 hours of work every single day. Like I work for the government and realistically, I only do 2-3 hours of work per day, just stretched out over 8 hours. Every now and then, things get busy and I actually do work for most of the day. But it's not enough that I really need 40 hours on the job.

The more you get paid the less you work. Albeit you generally have more responsibility so it kinda evens out. In general. Not talking about guys like Musk.

What if you want to drive 400kmh? These rules were made for peoples own good, if people want to work 60+ hours they should move to a place with shittier or no rules.

I hear you, but just because they teach it doesn't mean anybody learns it.

Maybe people would be better at history if textbooks weren't QA'd by how damn painful they are to read (or at least, were QA'd so that less painful is better).

Those are shitty rules. Forcing 60 hours total instead of letting a person work more is shitty. There are people who work two jobs just to survive.

My sister likes doing 3 12s a week,

I sure as hell think we would all be better off in a world where truck drivers don't have to work 60 hours a week to support a modest family life.

I'm salaried and working 60-70 and will be for another 3 weeks. It's a terrible job and should not exist but I'm not qualified to do anything else that pays more than $10 an hour

Sadly this is true in some areas. Most people who worked my last job only worked it because it wad the best paying job in town. Like a third of them all used to be coworkers at a another place that went out of business.

This is so common. So many places I worked you meet people that worked at other places together, and bounce from one low paying job with no future to the next.

But we're supposed to cry for the "job creators" that do not so much "create jobs" but have the connections and resources to happen to be able to employ people to increase the profits they alone in the ownership class reap.

This wasn't low paying jobs based on the area. It's just to most it was a undesirable job.

Off my pay I paid all the bills my mom's phone and car bill and groceries for both. I live in. A 3 bedroom 2 full bathroom house on rent. This on top of my alcohol addiction and her and mine smoking addiction. Only thing I didn't pay for was her meds because her disability barely covered that

I understand but low pay can also make any job undesirable. I'm happy the one you have can at least pay your bills.

What I do now pays less but it's so easy and stress free. At one point with my last job I am confident I was getting stress induced ulcers.

Yup. Humans don't even maintain peak brain function or energy levels that long with minimal work/stress let alone a job that hard/stressful. Both circadian rhythms and the physical/mental strain of work simply do not allow it.
