IIRC, Susan Smith got the shit kicked out of her several times before authorities moved her onto solitary.

at the very least she plead guilty to the charge. While I know plea deals are a thing, you don't plead guilty to one aggravated count of murder without knowing what A) you're agreeing to and B) what you did.

What is wrong with you.

I remain firm on my stance that the death penalty should be abolished because even if only 1 innocent person is put to death then it's a bad system, but cases like this really test my resolve.

I went into it expecting some sort of context that makes the story make sense, like, she hired a sitter and like an idiot didn't actually wait for the sitter to show before leaving for the airport or something. You know, the kind of thing that would make this mind-boggling stupidity instead of, just, unfathomable evil. But it never came.

I dunno, maybe she's just a complete nutcase or something. It's hard to imagine anyone in their right mind would do something like this.

Either way, prison is where she belongs. Holy shit.

Its like a gimmick for him to say that at this point and in this instance, it was probably a far emotional response. Nothing you said was wrong though.

I remember hearing about this story last year. This is extremely heart breaking. I just can't fathom going on vacation for 16 days with your toddler left home alone. I just cannot process someone actually doing that.

Same. My little girl is three and I would do anything for her. This terrible crime hits really hard.

Lifetime solitary confinement, so she can feel what her child felt. No one need look upon this woman ever again.

...Why? They're absolutely right.

This is a tragedy and the mother should absolutely be held accountable, but if she has a history of mental illness you can't ignore the role it played. Proper treatment and support for the mother could have saved this child's life.

The CNN article says that she left her child with a few bottles of milk. At room temperature, those bottles are going to spoil within a couple of days, so she probably got food poisoning on top of it, which probably hastened her death and increased her suffering.

People are so weird, talking about prevention methods to stop this sort of thing from happening in the first place isn't excusing the crimes of the individual. We can talk about how to prevent this from happening again AND talk about how horrible this woman is and how she needs to rot in jail for the rest of her life.

You're right, she certainly has some kind of severe mental health problems to be this neglectful, more than just depression. And maybe if she was given the right health care and warning signs about this behavior were acted on, this horrific accident wouldn't have happened. Unfortunately, it did happen and she's being rightfully held accountable for it, so the next logical step is to put money and resources toward prevention via mental health services.

Postpartum depression absolutely can, especially when combined with other issues. And if you read the article, it's outright stated that the mother had "depression and other mental health issues," so it wasn't just depression in a vacuum.

Some of the 'hardest' people have breaking points, especially once they realize they have no out for the situation they're in. Early 30s is around the time you start fully acknowledging your mortality.
