RetuenOfDevsman 03/21/24 11:14:37 AM #1:	I get that some Japanese sounds are ambiguous when localizing to English. For example, if your names is Thamuel or Samuel, you'd localize them to Japanese the same way. Probably something like Sameru. So naturally, if you are Japanese and your name is Sameru, you could either localize it as Samuel or Thamuel. Or Thamur. Fine. What I don't get is that characters and locations and stuff with made up names, even when they've been officially localized, continue to have fans evidently just say screw that and do it differently. Example: the main character from Tales of Phantasia is named Cress. Unless you are an internetter, in which case for some reason it's Cless. Sure. I can see how those two could be different localizations if the same thing. What I don't get is, has it ever actually been localized that way, or are people for some reason looking up the Japanese name and deciding to localize it differently? Another good example is Yoko Ritona, whose "last name" (I actually don't remember them giving her a last name in the show) is just a relocalization of "Littner", the town she is from. Then we finally got FF5 for real as a PSX port, with a different translation for things, and so people had different baselines and adopting to the "new" or "proper" name is cumbersome. FFT suffers similar with Algus (PSX) or Algath (PSP). Or, more famously, Aeris. Before ToP was officially localized, there was a fan translation patch that called him Cless, so I guess that just stuck with some people.
