i think the endgame shit is a definite difference that gets understated. character creator drama, literally before you even start moving. new game+, after 80+ hours.

the latter is significantly more damning and unacceptable but ultimately people let it slide because they could play the game and not worry about it until later, at which point they'll grumble but fork the money over to a feature that's been a gaming staple for 20+ years and has zero reason to be locked.

No, it gets normalized because people buy it. I can criticize all I want, doesn't change that. This example is just simply a bad hill to die on, especially when the claims are being exaggerated for outrage bait and leveraged against influencers and actual critics!

We've seen behind the scenes data that Steam reviews affect sales numbers. By review bombing games with MTX, users can reduce the sales of those games.

Not to say that doesn't matter, but when it comes to MTX, all it takes is a few whales. These game companies have the data, and as long as it continues to make them money, it's just always going to be there. It would take a massive change in the consumer for anything to actually mean anything towards this type of stuff to change.

Also I think with IW most of the MTX are things that are also obviously available in-game, or bonus content (except for NG+). With DD2 it seems a lot of people had a kneejerk reaction, thinking the MTX won't be available at all otherwise.

In both cases, and with every game that does this, the store page specifies the items are available in-game. Not just for MTX, but even with pre-order bonuses they have to do that.

Having finished Infinite Wealth, the NG+ thing is pretty terrible just because there's one achievement that's deliberately unfeasible without it. And two jobs being carved out as launch DLC is also annoying. Great game though.

the problem is, they could have been implemented as one-off tickets like in rise, so communication was still unclear. rise style tickets in a game with DD2's restrictions would be terrible

It's not that terrible, but it is sort of the bare minimum of charming bits and what can technically be considered gameplay content.

"We are looking at adding a feature to the Steam version of the game that will allow players that are already playing to restart the game. We will announce more details as soon as we can."

Completely unrelated to this entire topic - this game kicks ass. Finally got a chance to sit with it for a few hours and it really does feel like the first game with tons and tons of jank shaved off. Feels so good to be playing an improved version of this combat system, can't wait to get my vocations leveled up.

The Steam score has risen from 36% (Mostly Negative) to 46% (Mixed). So...improvement!

Reminds me of the Genshin players who wanted to boycott the banner over Chinese New Year, only for it to be one of the highest-grossing banners ever.

A game can be successful and still be affected by controversy. DD2 would be putting up even better numbers if none of this happened.

The overlap is surprisingly huge. It's just the boycotters are always a much smaller group.

...i mean, cyberpunk had over a million concurrent players on steam and that didn't stop it from being massively controversial or with a ton of refunds. also in order to refund the game those people need to be in that pool of concurrent players.

similarly the expectation is that yeah you'll lose 70%+ of concurrent players a month later so that won't affect much, though it does help show what legs a game may have. but neither is/will be that relevant.

Except Cyberpunk was so broken on console it was pulled from the PS Store entirely. The Steam version of both games were never that bad despite short memories and hand wringing.

Yeah I had next to no issues on Cyberpunk on release on PC, outside of some mission marker bugs. Performance wise I never saw anything close to resembling the console fiasco(I know people had issues on PC too, but every CDPR game in existence has came out from being unplayable(OG Witcher 1) or super buggy(Witcher 3).

Similar to that, I haven't experience anything super concerning on performance on PC either for DD2. Maybe I'm also just not as sensitive to that kind of stuff, as long as I can maintain a steady 60, with no pop in I'm pretty good.

Performance wise it's been great for me outside the city with only minor frame time hitches here and there. City absolutely tanks fps (like, I go from 120+ in the field to bouncing around 30-55 in the city, generally on the upper half of that range at least) but honestly given how loud the complaints were I was prepared for much worse. Performance overall is supposed to be much worse on console so I guess those folks might be a bit more understandably upset.

I'm playing on Series X and it seems fine. It's not 60, but it's at least pretty consistent.

Fun game. Being an archer is kinda boring, but I'm determined to stick it out to see what the later skills look like. There's also a bunch of weird design choices, especially with the voice direction, but it would be a lot less charming if it was more competent.

I swear to fuck though, if my pawns talk about ladders one more time...

Huh, this sounds a bit funny to me because surely it depends wildly on the PC rig. I guess they're comparing it to state-of-the-art gaming PC rigs.

i mean breakdown Steve gave for some early stuff basically is summarized to NPCs are taking so much of the CPU resources that it literally can't offload anything to the GPU. it's played straight and rig doesn't particularly matter that much, 4060 or 4090, Intel or AMD, same shit. performance utterly tanks and even just glancing at the town when outside of it will trigger this reaction. meanwhile in the wild, with no NPCs around, easily shifts almost completely to the GPU and combat's a healthy mix. something's clearly wrong but it should be fixable in theory and Capcom already is working on it. consoles performing worse probably comes down to the transition between full CPU usage to full GPU usage having issues, the weaker CPU on consoles, or both.

I'm waiting for patches + sale. The optimal AAA game experience these days.

It's slightly better in towns for me.

This game is kinda crazy tho, crazy fun for sure. I'm still exploring the very opening area and finding new things. Game rewards you almost everytime for just exploring around.

Seems like fans are turning on the game for the later parts, too? Apparently it ends pretty abruptly, and the post-game is basically non-existent.

Yeah the original game had no post game at all. You can't go back after starting the final battle and its just encourages you to start a second playthrough.

What? The Everfall was a massive post-game dungeon in the original DD.

The everfall is after the first "ending" but before the true, actual ending. And you barely have to do it for the true ending, so it can qualify as postgame depending on what you consider that to be.

But it also sucks, so there's that.

Everfall wasn't very good it was something I guess. I'm 20ish hours into this and still exploring the first region - it's been a great time so far but I'll be very perplexed if this game does indeed have the same shortcomings as DD1 seeing as that game was famously unfinished and ostensibly the whole point of this game was to "do it right." (Like, to the point that the title screen and title card both just say "Dragon's Dogma" with no "2.")

Ah, I guess I wasn't considering anything before the true ending to be post game, but I can see how it could be considered that.

I will say that sometimes the textures in the caves don't load and just look like low-polygon mud. lol.

Man, this game is brutal. I'm at the very beginning and I came across this cave with some awesome leggings, but as soon as I go to leave a hobgoblin runs up out of nowhere and murks my whole party and then chases me all the way to the encampment where he runs through the doors, past like 3 guards and one-shots me. He chased me like half a mile! After many, many reloads, I finally just got lucky and he randomly stopped chasing me and let me get back to camp and rest overnight.
