I reached Cosmo Canyon and immediately it gives me what I want.

I love Red but always thought his voice was at odds with the character being comparatively young, but the change in his voice when he arrived in CC was so sweet

So how do you actually play Yuffie (and Cait for that matter)? At least on par with Red's damage so I can swap him out

With Yuffie, I just press triangle and then square a whole bunch until they die usually.

Yuffie I just cast Doppelganger and go from there depending on what I need her to do. She also builds ATB insanely fast.

Yuffie: Throw, Ninjutsu, Banishment once you get it. Rinse and Repeat. Cast doppelganger for ridiculous stagger damage. Add Shooting Star and I was tearing shit up.

Cait Sith: ATB ability materia helps. Regular combo plus Kitty Wallop builds ATB really quickly. Let's Ride will usually grant you an additional ATB if it hits. Fortune Telling is usually a crit. Moogle Knuckle is reliable damage and dice can really help. Alternatively, call the moogle and cast spells as the kitty.

Honestly, the battle system is a masterpiece. How they were able to make 7 distinct characters that ACTUALLY play differently and allow you to switch instantaneously between them. With double techs? It's like a dream.

Yeah something I'm not sure the game tells you is that you can change the element you imbue her weapon with. So you just pick whatever element the enemy is weak to, use triangle to throw it and stick it to them, then start spamming square.

When they get staggered you get in close and use Art of war 2 times and the 2nd time it does an upgraded version.

Throw/Ninjutsu seemed so weak compared to Red/Cloud/Tifa, but I guess it's prob better on element weak enemies

It is pretty weak but it also has unlimited range and continues doing minor damage even when you're not mashing square. So it's basically just used to stagger, then you get in and spend ATB.

I do like Yuffie for building up ATB.

So far Gongaga is my least favourite location.

You can also survive Zantetsuken by summoning Phoenix and having it cast Reraise on as many part members as possible. I dont know if the Reraise status goes away once the summon ends, but if you summon as soon as Odin blows his horn you should be able to at least protect whoever has your revive materia equipped.

If they let you know where the mushrooms sent you gongaga wouldn't be so bad

but it's definitely tough to get through

I liked it, felt much less empty.

In some sense, for open world specifics, I prefer FFXV world map over Rebirth.

Rebirth has better highs and the major hubs like Junon and Gold Saucer are better, but for just moving around the map, I did like XV more.

XIII-2 is still the best formula I reckon for stagger based combat.

Reraise persists even after Phoenix goes away so that can work well. Of course you still play well enough to live lone enough to get a summon off.

And yeah for Yuffie the very basics are to switch your Ninjutsu to whatever element the enemy is weak to, toss your shuriken at the enemy, and spam square to build easy ATB and stagger. Then you can cast Doppleganger for extra DPS and Shooting Star for free damage/CC at range. You can tap triangle to close in to whichever enemy your shuriken is in to drop an Art of War - if it connects you can follow up with Supreme Art of War which does more damage and has a bigger range. Obviously the natural time to do this is when you stagger an enemy. Because she builds ATB so easily and safely at range she's good for throwing up buffs like Haste or Barrier/Manaward or Faith or spellcasting. Once you cast 3 (level 2) or 6 (level 3) ATB moves (with some exceptions like Brumal Form) Banishment will be charged up which is pretty good and safe damage too. Her raw damage output doesn't compare to Tifa's if that's all you want, but she provides a great balance between safety, damage and versatility.

For Yuffie, you give her Speed Demon Keychain, you cast Haste and ATB Ward on her, and then spam Brumal Form while on the ward to give the party infinite ATB

The cheese strats begin lol. I'll keep that in mind if I get stuck in any hard mode fights

The chocobos in Nibelheim are by far the most fun I feel like a god on this thing

I think it's great. I'm glad they stuck to OG for him going back to his actual personality instead of the put on one. It adds a lot to his character as well, I'm excited to see where they go with him in Part 3.

This is such a fun cheese and destroys everything in Hard mode where can you have Aerith and Yuffie together.

On the Cosmo Canyon event, my only real issue with Red's voice change is that it somewhat imbalanced the party towards being young/playful/spunky/naive and forced Barret to provide most of the serious leadership and reflection (with Red, Yuffie, and Aerith all acting that to one degree or another, Cloud increasingly out of it in the back half of the game, and Tifa being very reserved). Thankfully Cid and Vincent will rebalance the dynamics in part 3 (and actually started doing so towards the end of this game, even).

It's just such a big contrast. I do like how his stupid silly side quests foreshadow it, but it does feel like 2 very separate characters.

I thought it was a nice touch that his dialogue changes in side quests if you wait to do them after the change.

I mean it makes sense, but they could have kept them the same either way.

During chapter 11 during the Nibel reactor climb, Yuffie calls us the Yuffie Recon Patrol or YRP for short. Sneaky FFX-2 reference in the wild!

Yes! It's so far above the other Chcocobo in fun factor and just general control and movement feel. It's a shame I can't take this Chcocobo back to the other regions.

Oh I'm so glad to see someone agrees with me about this! It's funny because on Reddit its largely people complaining about this "change". Literally saw people use the words "character assassination". In regards to a character with no voiceover in the original game???

Advent Children basically got every single character wrong. I'd say that is more characterS assassination than anything that happened in Rebirth, by far.

Part of the problem too is that yeah Red's dialog and everything changes after Cosmo Canyon in OG, but he has like 0 relevance and barely any lines after Cosmo Canyon in OG so that also makes it hard to tell.

Old RPGs have that issue where characters become completely irrelevant after their arc / chapter, etc

Heck, happens in most new RPGs too

AC is a horrendous film.

Especially the rerelease.

Apparently it's easier to tell in Japanese and is slightly lost in translation. His way of speaking clearly changes though and talks more teen like.

I can def imagine how they do it in Japanese. But even so, I would imagine it like he's still using a gruff voice, but talking childlike. I wish they tried that here. The voice is just too jarring.

I enjoy both voices quite a bit but slightly prefer his real voice / character after playing him for awhile because you can actually hear his voicelines in battle. Compared to his deeper, put on voice where you can't tell what the hell he's saying because everything else is too damn loud (even with music/sound effects turned down) and the deeper voice just completely blends in.

It being jarring is the best part, he's putting on a performance and doing a great job of it, it should be jarring. Props to Max Mittelman for absolutely killing it.

He has the most years lived but he's far from the "most experienced." He lived the vast majority of his 48 years in a bubble.

So I came back today to try the Odin again. Idk if it's just my atrocious luck or what but he just spams Zantetsuken as much as he can against me. And this time I dodged nearly every attack of his. I think I got hit twice before he did his first one, then never got hit before he used his next one less than a minute later. This is just dumb and unfun.
It's also really annoying that I can't change any of my gear without completely closing out of the VR and then going back in again. They should have had a change equipment option within the VR menu.

He's lived in a bubble, as mentioned. He's probably the least experienced person in the party outside of Yuffie.

odin killed me a lot

what really helped me was actually adjusting the materia setup and making sure everyone had some kind of ATB up materia (either ATB stagger or ATB synergy etc)

cloud/tifa/barret was my squad

Oh whoa(ch 11 proto relic spoilers) the Broden reveal actually kinda fucked me up. Idk I was just super surprised to see him and it's super sad.

Yeah I heard Red's voice in AC and thought "oh ok guess that's his canon voice", so I came to terms with it years ago. But I've always disagreed with it because like...it's so gruff. Guy's a kid. Him being young endeared me to the character a lot.

Then remake came along and it did the same thing. I did not expect them to do this 180 to how he should have been in AC, and I'm really happy they did. He's such a good lab rat dog

Anyway, Bugenhagen scene in the Planetarium ruled. Probably the OG was better for me because I wasn't anticipating Cosmo Canyon to just randomly drop one of the best scenes in the game while here I actively looked forward to it. But it looked terrific - they definitely did it justice

Yeah I just did this like two hours ago and it got me too. Sephiroth must be stopped!

I beat the Odin fight after like 5 tries on the lowest difficulty for him lol. Definitely a tough one. People were saying you had to not get hit but I think that's BS cuz I tried swapping to Yuffie and just spamming the shurikens and I wasn't taking any damage but he still ends up casting it. Ended up winning with Tifa/Cloud/Aerith rush down

Yup this was my exact experience. It must be purely how aggressive you're being with your ATB attacks. I still haven't tried again though.

I just got to chapter 12 and it dumped so many new sidequests and shit to do that I felt overwhelmed and called it a night. Maybe I'll beat this game one of these days...
