There are still talented visual filmmakers & cinematographers, but big studios are more focused on generic blockbuster BS that's generally pretty mid looking, and often way too over-reliant on CG.

Ya, for me when I watch banshees of Inisherin, birdman, game of thrones, all quiet on the western front, and a slew of other range of movies/shows, Im always like, boy this looks like shit, I wish I could go back to rear window days

There are a lot of movies nowadays that use cgi and practical effects well, but when movies didn't have CG as an option back in the day, especially the 70s, those ones will always be the best.

With films rarely filming on location these days, a lot of the magic has been lost. Even sticking to recent films, the newest Mad Max vs Fury Road is a perfect example of this.

i feel like if these are the best looking movies then we have very low standards nowadays. literally none of these movies/shows look good and in fact look bad.

how many movies do i need to watch to determine it was better looking than anything from '23? i got up to like 35-40 i think and most were the best reviewed films of the year. unless there are like bad movies that are mysteriously gorgeous. open to recs if you have any.

Whenever this discussion comes up, i think about Moonraker from 1979.

So right at the beginning of the movie, Bond gets pushed out of a plane without a parachute by Jaws, and the other villain has already jumped out with a parachute.

So Bond dives and catches the other guy midair, a fight ensues, Bond wrestles the chute off of him, the other guy is screwed and falls to his doom. Then a fight with Jaws in midair happens, as Jaws has a chute and has dived and chased after Bond now.

The point of all this is that that entire scene took IIRC, 90-something jumps out of a plane to shoot. Even today it looks awesome.

But today, that scene would be shot with green screen, wires, and giant fans. It would look phony as hell.

Are you sure you're talking about "modern movies" and not just bad movies?

Don't forget that James Bond was the "big budget action movie" character of those days. He was essentially a 1:1 equivalent to Mission Impossible now. Plenty of movies in those days were using wires and wind machines instead of actually jumping out of planes, too.
