Rules: If you list more than 4 things I'm gonna just tally the first 4 you say. If you list the same character multiple times it won't count. Be nice. Don't shove your personal definition of "Mount Rushmore" down others' throats. Have fun. If you're going to majorly change a vote please quote your old vote to make it easier for me.

Metal album-specific rules: I know zero, I mean ZERO about Metal. I watched Metalocalypse and that's about it. You guys are completely on your own to self-govern here. If you are going to make any joke votes I will not get the jokes. I will not know if something needs to be thrown away. I am going to tally everything as I see it and assume every vote is serious and valid.

PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY ABBREVIATIONS because I am not going to be doing any excess googling to figure out what your votes are supposed to be. I will throw votes away without remorse and will stop doing Rushmores for things I don't have basic knowledge about if people are not meeting me half way here. Thank you.

YESTERDAY: This one was absolutely wild to tally. We went from having a very dominant Top 4 of Spongebob/Rugrats/Avatar/Arnold, to a complete collapse of Arnold. All of a sudden people just stopped voting for Arnold, and we even had light "is Arnold really that great?" discourse sprinkled throughout the topic. We might have also had a bit of "Arnold doesn't need the help I'm gonna vote Kappa Mikey instead."

This allowed both Ren and Stimpy AND Oddparents to close a gap of over 5 votes to tie Arnold. Arnold then started getting votes again and pulled away... only to drop the (foot)ball AGAIN, allowing Ren and Stimpy to tie it up again by the time I closed the topic. Oddparents also came close to making this a three-way tie and probably would have if I hadn't closed it.

I threw out three votes for Nick Jr shows because the consensus seemed that they didn't count and should be their own shows. We now have Nick Jr Shows Rushmore at the top of the nom list thanks to all the support.

Aw too bad Helter Skelter can't get in. And I'm actually going to challenge myself a little bit, I know most albums are going to come from the 70s-80s and with good reason but newer-ish albums that were influential for the new wave of metal I think would be interesting too to consider

Slipknot - Iowa
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

Black Sabbath: Paranoid

^I have a very, very hard time choosing between the first three Black Sabbath albums as to which is their overall best (I have Vol. 4 as #6, the fifth and sixth albums in either order as #5 and #4, and then the first three duking it out for the top three spots), but there is no denying that Paranoid is the bands signature album with their most well-known songs like War Pigs (my favorite), Iron Man, and the title track. The quality does not stop there, the deeper cuts are excellent (Hand of Doom, for example). Its just a terrific album.

Judas Priest: British Steel

^A Judas Priest album needs to be here, and, while there are definitely better albums (Painkiller comes to mind, or my personal favorite of theirs, Stained Class), British Steel must be their most commercially accepted album. And even if I dont believe this is their best, its still pretty damn good. Obviously Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight are two of their most famous songs, and youve got great others like Metal Gods and The Rage. I dont really care for United, but thats a big concert hit.

Metallica: Master of Puppets

^It has to be either Master of Puppets or the Black Album (although if I were picking a personal favorite, it would be a hard call between Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning). While the latter is the bigger commercial success with songs like Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam, and The Unforgiven (and I think there are some great, lesser-known songs on the album as well), I really think that Master of Puppets has to be acknowledged for being the more metal of the two. The title track is killer (those of you saying you dont know much about metal may recall hearing it in the movie Old School), and you have another very well known song of theirs in Welcome Home (Sanitarium) which is terrific. Im going to stand up for some lesser-known songs here as well: the instrumental Orion is one of my favorite overall Metallica cuts, and so is Damage, Inc. I also love Leper Messiah.

Candlemass: Epicus Doomicus Metallicus

^Ill readily admit that the objective answer for the fourth kind of has to be Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden, but I honestly never got into Iron Maiden when I tried listening to their stuff in the past. Which is kind of a sacrilegious thing to say when it comes to metal, but whatever. So instead Ill use my last slot to highlight perhaps the most classic doom metal album. Six amazing songs, with the opener Solitude probably being the most well-known (I love how both Black Sabbath and Candlemass have songs titled Solitude). My favorite is probably a toss up between Black Stone Wielder and A Sorcerers Pledge. The former is sort of one of these build up songs and when they finally let loose and kick it into high gear toward the end is just amazing. The latter makes excellent use of some female vocalizing to help emphasize parts of the story being told in the lyrics as well as some almost death metal growling the first time that Johan Langqvist gets to the when the sorcerer will rise! lyric. The second time he comes to that lyric, he goes for a more operatic scream and the contrast of just the different deliveries of that specific line is one of my favorite things going on. As for the aforementioned story being told in the lyrics, its appropriately fascinating and creepy.

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Slayer - Reign in Blood

Any serious metal rushmore basically requires a Sabbath album, and Paranoid has both the big hits and some crazy influential songs (in metal circles Electric Funeral and Hand of Doom are almost as influentialy as that album's big 3). Number of the Beast debuted the Dickinson era, was pretty controversial when it came out and is still a massively popular and influential record. Metallica is almost as obligatory as Sabbath (though KEA and the black album can be argued to be here over Master). Slayer in the last slot is there mostly to represent extreme metal.

There are way too many HMs, most of them in genres not repped above (death, black, power, prog, etc.), to even bother listing so I will instead say yeah Judas Priest should probably be here but one problem: unlike with the bands above, picking one album with them is excruciatingly hard. They legitimately have half a dozen albums that could be on the rushmore.

unsure for a 4th.
but Linkin Park honestly deserves a spot there because it ended up being the album of a generation and a half, as well as a massive transition of metal with subgenres coming out of it.

Pleasantly surprised to see sensible suggestions here today! I broadly agree with most of the consensus here: you need Sabbath here, some kind of NWOBHM rep (Maiden or Priest), probably Metallica, plus something representing more extreme styles (Slayer or Death cover this pretty well). I'll throw a wildcard into this last slot, which I think manages to cover extreme metal (in more ways than one), "hipster" metal, and popular notoriety well.

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Burzum - Filosofem

Would be great to do this for other genres!

black sabbath - black sabbath
iron maiden - the number of the beast

does the genre make it through the 2000s without nu metal? can it be true that nothing made a significant impact past the 1980s? these thoughts lead me to hybrid theory. the other three are so obvious that i only respect your vote if you went for a different album from the same artist

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Metallica - Master of Puppets

Withholding my last nom for now because I gotta think about this one. We basically have four(ish, could argue five) eras to metal, and right now these noms cover two and a half. Early heavy metal/protometal, New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and the 'radicalization of metal' era that kickstarted with Thrash. This leaves the metal renaissance (kickstarted not by nu metal but by Panthera's Cowboys From Hell, commercially -- metal was completely alive and well as a scene but it had fallen off the map commercially for a while if we don't take glam metal as a real part of the scene), and current-millennium metal. I'm not sure what a good representative for the latter would be, but kinda lean towards it. It has to be something from the point where metal genres started intermingling, I think. Any ideas?

i did think about cowboys, i just wonder how it holds up historically. but the more i think about it, it really is an honest shout - much of the sound of modern metal does start with the groove they introduced

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Dream Theatre - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory

Venom is worthy, but I can't in good conscience not rep prog metal when it's a huge part of my musical tastes. Scenes From A Memory is still a template a lot of gifted groups strive to reach. It's a worthy representative for the more technical and melodic side of metal.
