I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

Flying has the lowest votals thus far, which kinda makes sense. I mean, Flying tends to be the secondary typing for most of its entrants (however plentiful those rosters may be), so people might not have as strong of opinions on Flying-types as an individual typing. Ultimately, Gen I got another victory, while Gen VI and Gen IV kept it close, with Gen VI scoring its third runner-up position of the contest.

For today's contest, we're doing Ghost-types. Much like Dragon, it took a couple generations to really give Ghost a decent roster. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Note: I will not be considering things like Dialga/Palkia's form changes in Gen VIII, as those are still technically the same in the way Giratina's form change was back in Gen IV.

Fire: Gen I (30 Votes, 47.62%)
Bug: Gen V (30 Votes, 44.12%)
Dragon Gen III (30 Votes, 41.67%)
Fairy: Gen VII (24 Votes, 39.34%)
Electric: Gen I (24 Votes, 37.50%)
Flying: Gen I (21 Votes, 35.00%)
Dark: Gen II (18 Votes, 26.87%)
Fighting: Gen IV (14 Votes, 21.88%)

Gen III is not great. Shedinja is a gimmick, and every other final stage either got a mega evolution or a straight-up evolution one generation later...which stands out.

Gen IV has some solid options, but Dusknoir is too little, too late, and Giratina sucks.

Gen V at least tried to do something new with their Pokemon, introducing three new type combos. Not my cup of tea though.

Gen II is solid, but there's only one Pokemon on the list.

Gen VIII against has the same problem is always has...too much monotype bullshit. Sinistea/Polteageist/Corsola/Cursola are all pointless additions that could have been something better. The Hisuian forms are solid though, and Spectrier is great, plus Dragapult is solid.

Gen VI has good megas, and Aegislash's whole line is solid, plus Gourgeist is fun for what is it. Phantump's line feels pointless though, and Gourgeist isn't THAT good.

Gen IX has some high-tier Pokemon like Ceruledge, Annihilape and Flutter Mane, plus fun gimmicks like Gimmighoul and Gholdengo...but Bramblin/Brambleghast and Greavard/Houndstone (which shouldn't be mono-types) bring it down.

Gen VII is solid with Marowak, Decidueye, Oricorio, Mimikyu...and then they fill up too much of the roster with stuff I don't care as much for.

Gen I is perfect, but there are only three options.

3, 4, 5 and 6 are all very strong (and when I'm complimenting Gen V in any way that's really saying something). My gut says 3 but it could be any of those middle-era gens on any given day.

Any of V, VI, VIII, or IX winning would be a correct choice. Even VII and IV keep it respectable.

But I give VIII the edge. G-Corsola line, H-Zorua line, and Basculegion all top tier, and Runerigus, Dragapult, and Polteageist are good too.

V is pretty much all good, but they don't quite hit the highs of other Ghosts.

VI has some great Megas, and I love Pumpkaboo and Phantump, but I dislike their evos. Honedge line is great.

IX is mostly being carried by Ceruledge and Annihilape both being amazing, while most of the others are also good to okay, but not great.

It hurt not voting for the Litwick line for Fire, but I can comfortably vote it here with a stronger Gen V line-up.

Probably 4. Mismagius, Froslass, Rotom, and Giratina are all cool, and the rest is alright. The later gens have too much boring filler (though I'm not a big ghost fan), while Gens 1 and 2 don't have enough ghosts.

9. Gen II - There's only one Pokemon here, and I'm pretty netural on it.

8. Gen III - Shedinja is a pretty interesting gimmick, but I don't really care for any of the others.

7. Gen IV - Driftblim is great, but nothing else really moves me. I kind of hate Spiritomb for being so hard to get all the time.

6. Gen VII - Some great Pokemon here with A-Marowak, Palossand, and Decidueye, along with a few other solid options like Dhelmise and Mimikyu, but Necrozma, Marshadow, and Blacephalon drag it down.

5. Gen IX - Ceruledge is awesome, Annihilape and Skeledirge are a tier down but still great, and everything else is kind of mid and Pecharunt can go away.

4. Gen VIII - A lot of good and a lot of bad. H-Typhlosion and Dragapult are top tier and H-Zorua line and Basculegion are cool, but the tea pots, Runerigus, and Calyrex suck.

3. Gen I - I love Gengar (and even Haunter) but a single line can only carry a generation so far.

2. Gen VI - Aegislash is one of my favorite ghosts, and I like Trevenant and Gourgeist quite a bit too. Throw in Mega Gengar and Bannette (a big improvement) and you have a great Ghost gen. Hoopa sucks though and Mega Sableye is very unnecessary.

1. Gen V - I like everything here! Chandelure is the main draw, but I enjoy Jellicent and Cofagrigus and even Golurk is pretty cool. It was a tough choice between V and VI, but I'm giving the nod to V for having no duds in the lineup.

i ended up voting for gen 7 because i feel like it has the most top tier ghosts for me personally, even if some of them, like lunala and palossand are in the lower percentage of my top 100. but idk there's like four other gens i probably could have voted for.

gen 5 doing well definitely makes me feel happy personally! chandelure and cofagrigus are my 12th and 13th favourite pokemon of all time. i used both of them in my original white team because balanced type coverage? who is that?

31 of my top 100 pokemon are ghost types i think i have problems ... this is also probably why i find gen 1 doing reasonably well is baffling to me

You can really see when Ghost started to become more interesting of a type. The past 4 gens have all been really great for Ghost types, both the quantity and quality. Gotta vote for 5 though.

Interestingly, Misdreavus is my overall favorite Ghost type Pokemon. But of course it's hard to obtain in GSC compared to the Gastly line. So glad they fixed that with HGSS.

My vote is because even if a generation has something really good (Sableye, Mismagius, Chandelures line, Aegislashs line, Marowak/Decidueye/Oricorio/Mimikyu/Lunala, Zoroark/Dragapult/Spectrier, Ceruledge, Annihilape, Flutter Mane, Gholdengos line), its offset by a bunch of lame stuff as well. Gengars line is perfect and theyre ALL high tier.

I guess I don't see the point in factoring in the bad. As far as I'm concerned if something has the most good, then it's the best.

I kinda get it. The first gen with more than 1 good line is Gen VI and there seems to be a bit of a bias in favor of Gen I-V (which is understandable due to the quality of the games). Personally I would pick anything Gen VI+ for ghost over all previous gens.

Went with Gen VII in the end. Marowak, Mimikyu, and Decidueye are just too good. Marshadow is one of the better mythicals IMO and with an interesting typing. Blacephalon is one scary mfer but I respect what it has going on for it.

Aegislash and Chandelure are also really, really good and I used them back in their respective gens but they can't carry their generation. I'm just 'okay' with their genmates.

Also I'm not voting for anything with Hoopa in it.
